I frequently fish Almaden Lake for Bass. Got a hit and knew immediately it wasn’t a bass on the end of my line. As the fish came closer to shore I couldn’t believe what I saw, hooked into a Rainbow Trout or maybe a steel head? Anyone else ever catch a trout at Almaden lake? Have they ever planted trout or is this wild species? Was only about 14 inches but fought harder than a farmed trout and had tons of energy when I safely released it.

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Fished at about 5pm under the Coleman bridge on the north side of the lake. Just testing some new Dobyns rods from shore & not expecting to catch anything. Pitched a 7" watermelon color Senko with flakes and was dead sticking it. 15 seconds later....tap, tap....Landed a 3 lbers for my first for 2009. The bass was in 5 feet of water.
    City: San Jose

Tips: Nothin on spinnerbaits, or crankbaits.....just the Senko worked. Plastics always works better than hard lures.

    Water Temp: high 50's

Water Clarity: Muddy (0-2 foot visibility)

Report: I fished at lake almaden and hit 5 fish...1 lbs, 1.7 lbs, 2 lbs, 2.4 lbs, 3.3 lbs. I hit all five fish texas rigged on soft plastics in green pumpkin. I used a small weight just to help the plastic get down a little faster. I was fishing about 7-10 feet and i noticed they were hitting it right before it hit the bottom. The bite was very light so be aware of line movement and don't hesitate to set the hook.

    Water Temp: dunno

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: First time fishing this place since 20 years ago!! I started at about 1p.m.(parked for free in the lot next to Almaden Expressway) and worked from the bridge to the sandy beach...I hooked into three, caught one that was about 2-2.5 lbs....Used a texas rigged purple glitter augertail(the same plastic I used 20 years ago with the FS 454 shit all over em...Caught more 4 pounders back then with those worms than anything else!)I only fished until 2:45 and had to bail....Not too bad for the middle of the day.

I witnessed some serious bass action during full moon at 1 am with a spinner 20 years ago too.....Maybe I will try that again? No, thats illegal:)

Can someone email me some secrets about this lake? I have not fished for so long I kinda forgot how!
    City: San Jose

Tips: Try fishing it at dark or middle of the night....Could produce some huge fish!!!

Water Clarity: Muddy (0-2 foot visibility)

Report: Most of those little boils are this years spawn. I still see several bass in the 1-2 inch range. They are most likely feeding on bugs and trying to get bigger for the future. Try light colored lures in light grays, light smoke, silver, or salt n pepper. Float tubing around the island is a sweet spot. It runs pretty shallow almost all the way around with the execption of a huge drop on the coleman side of it.

    Water Temp: NA

Water Clarity: Muddy (0-2 foot visibility)

Report: Fished from 6pm to 8pm. Lake was muddy, with weed growth on the bottom. Fished the shoreline from Coleman to Almaden Blvd. pitched a weightless senko to cover. No takers - saw no cruisers either. Just before the sunset minnows started popping the surface at first I thought there was a bass feeding and they were jumping for cover but they were popping out of the water all along the shoreline - shallow. Thinking there might be a predator nearby I tied on a buzzbait (thinking now I should have tried a pop'r) no takers at the buzzbait, I threw it past the popping minnows and swam it through them. No takers whatsover - I didn't see any blow-ups on the minnows either..

Anyone else see this? Don't know if this is a common occurence but if it is then targeting the bass should not be too difficult during this timeframe. Just need to find the right shoreline depth changes etc...
