Expectthe same results with bright nights this week. Do not expect striper boils especially early in themorning. There may be some mid morning or evening surace activity but night eeding precludesmost early morning topwater opportunities. The good news is that stripers are hungry andstationary. They are very susceptible to anchovy bait and huge catches are possible lake wide.Use the graph, anchovies and the anchor or best success. Adult ish are holding near the bottomwhile yearlings are cruising in the upper 20 eet looking or plankton. Fish both strata whileanchored trying to get a striper school started. Ater the irst bite watch the graph, raise andlower the bait to correspond to depth o ish observed swimming under the boat. Full moon otencauses ish to hit gently. Keep the bait moving slowly so that line is constantly tight and thelightest hit can be detected. An 8-pound test luorocarbon (low visibility) leader will increasecatch rate o inicky stripers. Locations that have produced stripers well recently include Piute Canyon and Neskahi Bay on theSan Juan. This may be the best striper spot on Lake Powell. Other spots include: Warm Creek east shore opposite the mouth o Crosby Canyon. Start on the east shore in shallowwater and head toward Crosby Canyon.     Report: LAKE POWELL FISH REPORTSeptember 27, 2001 By Wayne Gustaveson Home Page: www.wayneswords.com Lake Elevation: 3665 Water Temperature: 75-79 FStriped bass ishing has slowed but smallmouth bass ishing is as HOT as the late summerweather.Bass are very cooperative over most o the lake. I ished Good Hope Bay on 9-25-01 in themiddle o the day and caught smallmouth at a rate o 10 ish per hour. A single tail sot-plasticgrub on a 3/8 ounce lead head worked great. Eliminate unproductive water by concentrating onthe EDGE o structure. Fish the spot where the rock slide joins the cli ace, or the edge o a reewhere it alls into deep water, or the spot where two habitat types meet or a rough spot on asmooth shore. Survey a shoreline rom the distance and pick out spots where habitat typeschange or other dissimilarities tip o bass holding areas. Target these spots or ast bass ishing. The huge rockslides lining both sides o the bay in lower Good Hope were alive with smallmouth. Drit parallel to shore and drop the grub down to the visibility limit. That is the spot where therocks or bottom substrate disappear into blue nothingness. Let the grub hit bottom directly underthe boat. Jig it up and down a ew times IF the ish lets it go all the way to the bottom beorestriking. Keep your six ish limit o smallmouth bass and enjoy a great ish dinner in camp. We ound good numbers o green sunish (orage orother ish) but very ew shad. As a general statement, most game ish are in the backs o canyonsand coves and not inhabiting the main channel. The exception to that is Hite and upper San Juanwhere shad are abundant and stripers are ound in the main channel. The lack o shad isimportant, in that, when shad are located ishing will be excellent in that particular spot. Findshad - stay close to them and catch ish. We worked and ished Piute/Neskahi Bay. Striper ishing is AWESOME! We ound shad in PiuteCanyon and in the small coves and cuts just upstream rom and on the same side as NeskahiCanyon. On the morning o 9-19-01 stripers were occasionally suracing (slurping) in open waterand along the shoreline. Casting surace lures near points and across coves near slurps producedstripers on almost every cast or most o the morning. This marks the beginning o the Fall eedingspree. We are still a week or two away rom great bass ishing but stripers are busting the suraceat Hite and eeding deep in the remainder o the lake. Hite is hot again or boils all the way rom the marina to Good Hope Bay. The morning boils areairly consistent. Expect to see some boiling activity on 2 out o 3 mornings with a repeatperormance in the early evening. The upper San Juan has a ew morning striper boils near Nokai and Copper but ish are stacked inhuge schools in Piute Canyon and in the main channel rom Nokai to Zahn Bay. Graph the backo Piute canyon or the channel near Nokai and then ish bait or spoons to catch all the ish you cancarry.Some boils (really just slurps) were seen at Bullrog, Halls Creek, Dry Rock Creek, Padre,Gunsight, Navajo and Cottonwood Wash in Warm Creek. Look in the back o the canyons wherebottom depth is 40-60 eet early in the morning. Check every splash by throwing a surace lureinto the splash ripples, ollowed immediately by a jigging spoon.     Report: LAKE POWELL FISH REPORTSeptember 6, 2001 By Wayne Gustaveson Home Page: www.wayneswords.com Lake Elevation: 3665 Water Temperature: 77-80 FFishing was slow on the last big summer weekend with lots o boat traic, ull moon and warmwater. It will take signiicant night time cooling to get Fall ishing jump started but the darkeningmoon will help get ish pointed in the right direction. With bright moon and cloudless nights morning ishing is slow. Late aternoon is much moreproductive or stripers and smallmouth. The aternoon/evening eeding period will prevail oranother week. Then the next two weeks in September may be the peak o Fall ishing.Stripers are deep! Hite and the San Juan continue to be the most consistent ishing spots butaternoon ishing lakewide is characterized by small yearling stripers being suspended in the watercolumn in the upper 30 eet. The bigger ish are deeper - sometimes down to 80-90 eet. Duringthe majority o the daylight period it is best to use anchovy bait and employ serious chummingtechniques to get and keep stripers going. Stripers can be graphed in deep slots (creek channels)that are very near shallow water. Back ends o slot canyons are great spots where the boat can bepositioned over deep water with shallow water within a short cast on either side o the boat. Fishbait in the deep slot during the day and reaction spoons and surace lures on the shallow edgesduring twilight periods. Plain slick rock canyons are not as productive as canyons with rockypoints near deep water. Any canyon where shad are seen is worth ishing. At Hite the most productive spots are in 2-mile and 4-mile canyons and the main channelbetween. Spoon ishing is most eective but an occasional boil is encountered and anchovies willwork as well. On the San Juan there are many stripers stacked in Deep and Piute canyons and inZahn Bay rom Donkey Island to Nokai Canyon. Catch ish with your choice o methods in theselocations.Smallmouth are in clear, deep main channel water where rocky structure alls quickly into deepwater with 25-35 eet depths being most productive. Look or ootball size rock (or larger)where crayish may ind a place to hide during daylight hours. In twilight periods topwater baitsare the preerred technique especially near Hite, upper San Juan and any other location whereshad are present. Bass ishing will get dramatically better during the last hal o September. Catish are regularly caught both day and night with bait ished on the bottom. Catish requentareas where stripers have been recently chummed or where houseboats have regularly parked. Sot odorous baits on a size 2-4 hook and a light weight are most eective.

    Report: LAKE POWELL FISH REPORTAugust 30, 2001 By Wayne Gustaveson Home Page: www.wayneswords.com Lake Elevation: 3666 Water Temperature: 77-80 FSummer is hanging on with seasonally warm air temperatures keeping the water warm andholding ish deep. Labor Day weekend will ind smallmouth bass and stripers in deep water. Sorry, but there will be no (or very ew) striper boils with warm water and a bright ull moonduring the busy weekend. Catch stripers by ishing early and late with jigging spoons or anchovy bait. Stripers remain inareas where they have been caught in July and August. Return to areas o recent success. Therehave been no major ish movements with most schools very near eeding spots that have beenused all summer long. One important dierence is the decrease in shad numbers which hasprompted more stripers to eed on bait. Look or suspended stripers airly shallow in the watercolumn (30-40 eet) that are susceptible to anchovies much like they are in the spring time. There has been a resurgence o striper catching at the dam on the west side at the second andthird barricade rom the wall. Some days yearling stripers are widespread but each day theavored spot near the wall produces 30-50 ish or the lucky boater tied in that spot. The key is towatch the graph and raise and lower the one-inch anchovy chunk to match depth o ish passingunder the boat. This pattern may be repeatable at Moki Wall near Bullrog and other steep walllocations that are historically good or catching stripers in the spring. Best locations or bait ishing are the dam, Padre Canyon wall jutting into Padre bay, Last Chancelast canyon on right, West Canyon walls where bottom depth is 55 eet. In the Bullrog area trollalong the main channel cli walls until catching a striper then ish with bait. Main channel cliareas 1-3 miles downstream rom Halls and near Forgotten Canyon are good starting points. AtHite ish in the main channel between buoys 132 and 134 with spoons or troll lures until indingish then use jigging spoons. The San Juan is overcrowded with striped bass ready to hit bait. Lots o ish at 40-55 eet in Deep Canyon, back o Piute Canyon and rom Zahn Bay to CopperCanyon. The Escalante had very little striper action at last report. Smallmouth are anxious to hit topwater lures very early in the morning and longer in shaded areaswhere sunrise is delayed by the shadow o the walls. In ull light bass go deep, 25-40 eet. Getdown with plastic grubs, tubes and bounce lures o the bottom or best results. Main channelclear water is better than stained water in the backs o canyons. Smallmouth like to move up anddown rather than long lateral distances to ind ood. They preer to eed by sight instead o smellso they are more oten ound in clear water. Catish are really active at dusk and can be ound on most gently sloping sandy beaches wherehouseboats consistently park. Use sot smelly baits like chicken liver or table scraps on a hookwith a light or no weight in 8-12 eet o water right behind the boat.

    Tips: Ater a ew weeks o generalized surace eeding activity shad numbers have declined but moreimportantly orage ish have learned to avoid stripers. Boils have decreased in number as striperschools need to work harder to drive shad to the surace or trap them in the back o a cove. Boilsstill occur but on an irregular basis. Stripers ind a school o deep shad and attempt to drive themto a vulnerable eeding ground. When stripers are successul a memorable boil ensues. Theeeding experience is oten not repeatable the next day. Now anglers have to be a little bit luckyto ind stripers on top. The best time to look or surace action is still during the irst 3 hours o daylight. The boil is justas likely to occur at 8:30 AM as 5 AM.. This week boils were reported in the backs o canyonsadjoining Padre Bay, at Castle Creek on the San Juan, and at Trachyte, Farleys, and North Washin the Hite area. With shad becoming more scarce the anchovy catch is increasing. Fish anchovies at 30-40 eet atthe mouth o Antelope canyon in the main channel, shaded walls on the point o Padre Canyonjutting out into Padre Bay (Padre canyon side o butte separating Padre rom Kane Creek), onemile downstream rom Halls Creek on the walls o the main channel, and cli walls near themouth o Forgotten Canyon. The San Juan has uncountable numbers o stripers to be had inDeep Canyon, Piute Canyon, steep rockslide between Cha Canyon and Pinnacle Rock, islandupstream and on the opposite side o the bay rom Neskahi Canyon. Some ish are declining in health. Catching them is enough o an energy drain that they cannotreturn to depth. KEEP ALL STRIPERS. Fillet the healthy ones and properly dispose o thosetoo thin to illet. In the rest o the lake, gangs o 10-25 stripers arehitting the surace or the irst two hours in the morning and again just beore dark. Hite stripers are boiling in the main channel and most o the canyons rom the Dirty Devil anddown as ar as Red Canyon. Some sustained 45 minute boils occur along with the regular 5-10minute boils which are most prominent. The only drawback is persistent wind beginning about 10am that riles the surace enough to mask boils. As soon as the wind calms stripers can again seeshad and boils start all over again. Stripers weigh 2-5 pounds and will hit ull size surace stickbaits, shallow running crank baits and spoons. Hite is the place to be or topwater stripers thisweek. Bass and stripers are chasing shad irst thingin the morning and are catchable every calm morning. Bass are taken along the shore line aroundstick ups and prominent rocky structure with surace poppers (Pop-r, Sugoi splash, chug bug).Cast near structure. Allow the lure to rest until ripples dissipate. Twitch once and rest. Twitchtwice and then work lure back to the boat in a steady chugging motion to tantalize bass. Stripers will be in open water. Watch or splashes and/or 2-3 swirls. The action may be verysubtle so concentrate on the water surace until you become adept at seeing the small signs. Individual ish splashes are probably carp but two or more splashes in close proximity are usuallystripers. While boils are seen almost everywhere atanytime o day, stripers are not as catchable as they will be in another week or two. Stripers areravenously chasing very small shad which are a small target. Stripers see shad, corner them butater the irst rush, shad scatter and stripers lose ocus. Then shad regroup and stripers ollowsuit. Stripers again rush orward and repeat the process time ater time. It has to be rustratingor stripers. They are expending great amounts o energy constantly chasing shad in warm wateror the small reward they get or catching an occasional one inch shad. Above the surace, anglers see small boils pop up all around. Stripers stay up long enough to getthe boat in range or one cast. Since stripers are searching or leeing shad instead o eating shadtrapped against the surace the regular dependable surace lures are not working well. Baitscranked down to represent leeing shad are more productive. Best baits or boils are small (+-3/4 ounce) silver and shad colored spoons, crank baits (at-ree shad, rattletrap, etc), and whitejigs in marabou and plastic.Timing o boils is slightly dierent than expected. These small boils are not ound at irst light butusually an hour ater daybreak. Shad wait or plankton to rise in the water column in response toincreasing daylight beore venturing out where stripers can see them. The boiling action persistuntil about 10 am. The whole process heats up again at 4 pm til dark.There will be an occasional big boil where stripers stay up and eat long enough to get the boatclose and catch more than one ish. Smallmouth will bite better or the irst angler ishing the shoreline eachday. There are so many miles o shore line that it is easy to ind an unished stretch at any giventime. Smallmouth ishing is still very good along main channel rocks, points, shelves and rees. Thesecondary points in canyons and coves are good too. Some midlake anglers are catching betterbass on spinnerbaits in the cloudy water in the brushy ends o coves. The most predictable patternis bouncing plastic grubs and tubes along the bottom around rocky structure in clear water. Crankbaits are working well at times and top water baits are great early morning and late evening. Lower and midlake stripers are moving and making a periodic sweep through a given home range. One day stripers in Navajo Canyon will be working the irst two points past the irst doubleislands just as they have been all spring. The next day they may be on dierent points in closeproximity and the third day may ind them in shallow water (30 eet) near the back o the canyon. Then they retrace the route and start over again. They are not bashul about eating once theschool is located. Chumming and ishing bait, spooning with vertical jigs, trolling with crank baitsall work to locate schools. The best method o catching big numbers o ish is bait ishing withlots o chumming once the general location o a holding school is ound. You may have to ind anew school each day but when you do the catch is well worth while. Periodically check spots thathave produced all spring to see i the school has returned to that location. Don

Filling will continue or at least 2more weeks. Antelope launch ramp is now useable although not oicially opened. Piute Farmsaccess is still not in service. Dritwood at Hite is thinning out and not the problem it was lastweek. Muddy water at Hite continues downstream as ar as the horn above Good Hope Bay. Mud rom the San Juan stops near Copper Canyon and water clarity improves in Zahn Bay. Stripers are moving into summer time eeding patterns but schools are still running the wallsduring mid day hours throughout the lake. Stripers can be taken by chumming with anchoviesnear main channel and main canyon points, shelves and islands. Chum (3-5 anchovies) and wait10 minutes. I no action move to another spot in close proximity. Stripers will usually hit aschum descends. Let your bait all at the same rate chum descends or best results. Using a smallsplit shot or no weight other than a 2 inch chunk o anchovy has proven to be very eective thisweek. It takes patience to let the bait all the 5 minutes it takes to reach 25 eet but the reward isconsistent. Ater the bait reaches 30 eet reel in and drop again. Keep the bait moving.Stripers hit at the dam, power plant intake and Navajo canyon points or a short time each dayand in good numbers every 3rd or 4th day. Try or midlake stripers at Moki wall, Moki canyon andCrystal Springs. Many other walls and main channel points are good. Uplake stripers have beenreported in White and Red Canyon.

Find shad and stripersand other predators will be nearby. Spawning and eeding begins at dawn and subsides as the sunhits the water. Get up beore daylight or the best action. Holiday crowds are descending. Fishing was hot as canbe last week. Sounds like a good time to be at Powell. Stripers have moved away rom the dam and power plant staging areas. Spawning is over in thelower lake. Stripers are randomly moving in search o ood. Moving striper schools may be takenat the customary spots but they are just as likely to be in Antelope, Navajo, Padre (Cookie Jar),Last Chance, Rock Creek, Mountain Sheep, Oak or Relection Canyon. Fish edges o cliswhere points, shelves, rees and rock slides provide a rest stop or snack bar or moving schools.
