Lake Mohave was formed in 1953 with the completion of Davis Dam. The Lake is 67 miles long and has 44 miles of surface acres. The lake also has up to 17 feet annual vertical fluctuation and current that can get as high as 16 miles per hour. Lake Mohave is part of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and is operated by the National Park Service. While the lake is a habitat for fish and wildlife; it also captures and delays the discharge of flash floods from side washes below Hoover Dam. Rainbow Trout are found in the cool, clear waters at the upper end of Lake Mohave, while Largemouth and Striped Bass are taken from the lower reaches of the lake. A fishing license from either Arizona or Nevada, to which a special-use stamp from the opposite state is attached, is required for those wishing to fish on Lake Mead or Lake Mohave. Facilities for public use are located at Katherine's Landing, in Arizona near Davis Dam, and at Cottonwood Cove, east of Searchlight, Nevada. Effective September 15, 2002, Lake Mead National Recreation Area will comply with a court-ordered ban on personal watercraft on Lakes Mead and Mohave. Personal watercraft are considered to be vessels, usually less than 16 feet in length, which use an inboard motor powering a water jet pump as their primary source of power.
