Gangwer / Fagundes Top Legend by Less Than 3/4 of a Pound at Delta

Sunday was one of days that you just don’t know about. As everyone checked in at Brannon Island for the days event, it was partly cloudy and partly stary with the wind blowing and making us think, oh no, another one of these spring windy days to fish. Wrong! One hour into the tournament the wind stopped and by noon it was raining. And the harder it fell the better the fishing got. Most everyone talked about how the big fish turned on as the cold front arrived. 28 teams turned out for a great day of fishing and when all was said and done, Legendary Dee Thomas and partner Jeff Chauvet feel less than ¾ of pound short of another win.

Today belonged to long time favorites Phil Gangwer and Carol Fagundes of Brentwood. These best of friends turned in a 7 fish limit that weighed 28.91 pounds and included two fish over 6 pounds in the bag. Carol told everyone at the scales, “this was one of the best days we’ve ever had and no matter how it turns out, it sure was fun”. I think that’s how it should always be for everyone involved in this sport. Sometimes we just take things to serious. Serious or not, this was a lot of fun for all as they were awarded first place plaques from Outdoor Sportsman in Stockton and a check in the amount of $1155. In true Phil and Carol appeal, Phil told all at the awards as he said, “we caught all our fish in Franks Tract, flippin’ Pumpkinseed Brushhogs and Senkos”. Congratulations to both for a fine day.

Second place went to “The Flippin King” himself, Dee Thomas of Brentwood and Partner Jeff Chauvet of Richmond. Jeff truly has turned into one hell of a partner as these two have teamed up in the last couple of years to log a lot of top 10 finishes. Their limit on Sunday was 28.29 pounds and was anchored by the big fish of the day, a Beautiful 7.47 lb. Delta Hawg. Chauvet spoke during the awards a while trying to keep the secret, he did let out what most of us knew, they caught their fish on Senkos and Brushhogs in the middle Delta. Dee made sure to thank long time sponsors Mercury, Motorguide, and Ranger Boats. Their check came to $1640 including Big Fish and Options.

Finishing in third were Delta favorites, Bobby Barrack of Oakley and Chris Ball of Antioch. The big fish in the bag was 5.66 lbs, which makes their 25.82 lbs. even that much more impressive. Barrack told everyone at the awards how they had to run far away, (south), as their normal water just wasn’t working and the afternoon bite sure was nice. He also said they switched to Terminator Spinnerbaits and “it just started to happen. Ball caught the big fish on a Helix worm, but that spinnerbait made all the difference in the world”. Third place took home a pair of those nice plaques from Outdoor Sportsman in Stockton and a check in the amout of $990. Bobby thanked sponsors Skeeter boats,Snagproof Lures, Adams Marine, Lamiglas, MinnKota, DJ’s rod repair, JD Reel Svc and Doc Waters.

Forth place went to Mike Reynolds and Bill Donaleski of Modesto. This is their 3rd check in as many tournaments and I’m sure the locals are glad that Mike is headed back to the FLW tour to complete the great season he is having back east. They received $690 for their 25.82 pounds. Fifth place went to Dean Grezlak of Clarksburg and Larry Noss of Sacramento with 24.34 pounds. They took home $360.
