Gangwer / Fagundes Top Delta Field at Bryant/Crenshaw Charity Fund

This past Saturday at Russo’s Marina on the Delta, 41 teams gathered for the 6th Annual Bryant/Crenshaw Memorial Scholarship Tournament. While the focus of the day was on college scholarships for two daughters of bass fishermen (Natalie Pelton & Stevie deVries), fishing is still what brought us together and the bottom line is fishing is what most people want to hear about. I would like to thank everyone who participated and helped us raise over $5000 this year with still more pledges do in soon.

The weather was very nice and for most the fishing was good. With a short day of fishing on tap (12:30 weigh in), these teams needed a good game plan and had to execute it to perfection. Finishing on top was long time friends Phil Gangwer and Carol Fagundes of Brentwood. Their 7 fish limit weighed in at 26.39 pounds and was anchored by a solid 6.02 Lb. Largemouth Bass. Gangwer told the crowd at the awards ceremony that all the fish this day were caught Flippin’ Reaction Innovation Tube Baits in the weeds around whites slough. Phil took the time to talk a little about Greg Bryant (one of the tournament namesakes), as he had taken Greg on his first Bass fishing trip, many years ago. Most importantly, he thanked all who came out to support the charity, and asked that everyone contribute a little to “Help the Cause”. We thank Phil for the kind words and appreciate his support as he donated some of the days $2050 in winnings. Congratulations to Phil and Carol as we know we will see you soon.

Second place Went to Manteca’s Steve Sapp and John Varanai. These guys also had a 7 fish limit that tipped the scales at a very respectable 24.24 pounds. Their bag also included a very nice 6.68 pound fish, pictured at out website, www.100percentbass.com. Sapp spoke at the awards, saying they started the day tossing Buzzbaits in the middle delta then switched to DeadRiggers as the tide changed. Even thought this was a charity event, these guy fought hard to win as they had a goal. John told me after the event they really wanted to give something back to a sport that has treated both of them very well. For their efforts, Steve and John received $1255, which they promptly donated most of it to the fund. Congratulations and thank you to a couple of class acts.

Third Place went to Chuck McCartney of Rio Vista and Gary Dobyns of Yuba City. With 7 fish that came in at 23.94 lbs, both guys were really excited to do so well on this day. Dobyns told us in an interview after the tournament, they fished the west Delta, and spent the morning throwing Top Water Baits and Flippin’. Gary said, “ The key was to fish it slow in those areas where fish were actively feeding”. For their reward they receive a check for $835.

Fourth place went to local favorites Jim Machado and Art Roland of Brentwood. They weighed in only 6 fish for 21.25 pounds, but included big fish of the day, an incredible 11.81 pound largemouth. Including big fish they took home $1040 for the day, and they also contributed some of the days winning to the cause.

Rounding out the top five was John and Lorenzo Rossetti with 7 fish that weighed 19.89. These guys had 2nd big fish of the, a real nice 7.74 pound hawg (also pictured at www.100percentbass.com). For their efforts, they received $610.

Special thanks to teams Bill Swearingen/Greg Merrill, Larry Vignolo/Chis Raza, and Pete Rehrmann/John Hewett. These guys finished 6th, 7th, and 8th and donated all of their winnings to the cause. Many thanks to all of you for the class you guys always show.
