Saturday was a beautiful day for fishing as 74 anglers showed up to start the Wine Region's race for the championship. Spanish Flat Resort on Lake Berryessa was our host and we thank them for a fabulous marina to host a bass tournament. While every team weighed in and most had 5 fish limits, we found out that a new lure on the market was the key to victory. River2Sea, a new player in the fishing industry has just released a "YABBIE". That's right, a crawdad imitation that will surely take the spring by storm and continue to win money for the anglers smart enough to use it.
On this day it was Lakeport's Mark Crutcher and Greg McCosker that put the "YABBIE" to work. Anchoring their 22.50 pound limit was a beautiful 10.56 pound Largemouth Bass that will surely go 13 or 14 pounds in just a couple of month. While one partner would through jigs the other would through Texas rigged Robo Worms and whenever they would get near a point with large rock, out came the "Yabbie". Sure enough, on one cast the tournament was won and the pattern paid off. The one thing Mark said that hit home was, "It is the most Life Like bait I have ever seen and that is what triggered me to buy it and use it". Well it definitely paid off, as these guys took home a pair of nice trophies and check for $2730. Congratulation to Mark and Greg for a great start in defending their Anglers of the Year title.
Finishing in second place Jared Stone of Lakeport and Mark Brown of Ukiah. Their 12.29 pound limit had a very respectable 3.20 lb anchor fish that brought them 3rd place in the big fish pot. Stone said they fished the north end of the lake all day and focused on areas where smallmouth bass would hang out. It paid off, as 4 out of the 5 fish in their limit were smallies and good sized ones at that. Most fish came on Brown Jigs however they did get a few dropshoting plastic worms. For their efforts, they also received a pair of plaques and a check for $1525. Glad to see these guys have a great start to the new season.
Third place went to 2003 Anglers of the Year, Vacaville's Jody Jordan and Folsom's Albert Berends. Their 5 fish limit included 3 smallmouth bass and 2 Spotted Bass and weighed in at 11.98 pounds. Albert told us at the awards they caught fish Rippin, dragging Persuader Jigs and swimming grubs. It sounds like they thru the kitchen sink at them also. Either way, it paid off as they received $980 for a fun day of fishing.
Forth place went to Ron Diacon of Rio Linda and John Caulfield of Sacramento. They weighed in with 5 fish for a very respectable 11.49 pounds. It brought them $665 while the fifth place check of $470 went to Alan Butts and Dave Symmons for their 11.09 bag of fish.
