Mohr/Peterson winners as Delta gets ready to explode

This week’s event was one that had something for everyone. Great weather, great fishing and some incredible fish brought to the scales. Everyone checked in at Russo’s Marina on the Delta and by 6 AM, 76 boats were ready to start searching for HAWGS. We weren’t disappointed as more that half the field had a 5 pound bass in their weigh bags and the top finishers had several. What we learned was Flippin and Spinnerbaits were the key to this day’s success with the big fish all coming with a plastic flip bait.

Finishing by a narrow margin, less that 1/3 of a pound, was Russ Mohr of Elk Grove and Jerry Peterson of Sacramento. Their 29.36 pounds was anchored by the second biggest fish of the day, a beautiful 11.58 pound largemouth. When you think about this, it means the other 4 fish in their limit averaged over 4 pounds. During the awards, Mohr thanked his sponsors, Galaxie Marine and Persuaders Baits, and said they caught all of their fish Crankin Big Daddy’s from LuckyCraft and Pitchin curl tail Yamamoto worms. Russ also said the focused on spawn areas in the central part of the delta. They took home a pair of nice plaques from Sponsor Gene Buchholz of the Hook, Line and Sinker and check in the Amount of $5430. Congratulations to Russ and Jerry for showing us how it is done.

Second place went to a couple local nice guys, Oakley’s Isacc Budesilich and Ernie Sanchez. With the big fish of the day, a 12.61 pound monster, Isacc and Ernie fell just short with 5 fish that tipped the scales at 29.05 pounds. Still are very nice day. They told everyone later that that Spinnerbaits and Senkos was all they threw all day. They also had a long run, as they spent most of the day in the south delta area, with the exception of catching the big fish only a few minutes from Russo’s Marina. For their efforts they also received a pair of trophies and a check for $3340.

Third place was awarded to many time champions on the delta, John Hewatt of Danville and Pete Rehrmann of Concord. With an 8.61 pound fish in the bag and a 5 fish limit of 28.04, these guys had a great average of 5 pounds for their other fish. Hewatt told us at the awards, they used Senko’s all day long and after running out west, they never left until it was time to run back for the weigh in. They took home $2105 and lead the field when they showed their big hearts in donating a portion of the winnings to the Bryant/Crenshaw Memorial Scholarship Fund. Thanks guys for you donations and congratulations on another great day.

Rounding out the top teams was the forth place team of “Raider” Mike Andrews and Bobby “D’s” Jigs, Bobby Delameter. They came in with 25.21 pounds and were rewarded with a check for $1140 while the fifth place award of $1065 went to Mark Mello and Marty Warner.
