Brownlie takes first day lead at Lake Havasu

LAKE HAVASU CITY—While catches were down from just a few weeks previous, WON BASS pros and AAA’s were in the midst of a hotly contested season opener at Lake Havasu.

Leading on day one was Scott Brownlie of Apple Valley, winner of the Tri-States Team Championship South, held here last month. His five bass weighed 12.98 pounds, giving him a narrow lead over Army Reserve pro Tim Klinger of Boulder City, Nev. who tallied 12.72 pounds.

Ray Leyerly of Laguna Niguel held down third spot with 12.07 pounds, including a 4.24-pound largemouth, while touring pro Thanh Lee of Lake Havasu City held fourth spot with 11.54 pounds, ahead of another local, Mike Goodwin who weighed in 10.82 pounds.

Those corresponding weights were matched with AAA finishers Jim Sims, Tom Nokes, Ken Whalen, Mike Frame and Jerry Baker.

The biggest bass of the first day at Havasu was a huge 7.70-pound largemouth caught by Quinton Roark of Sierra Vista, Ariz. on a reaction bait.
