Saturday wasn’t your normal start to a tournament. While the cold of weeks past was gone, a new barrier arose for today’s anglers, Fog. The fog settled in about a half hour before blastoff and the next time you could see across the lake was about 2 pm. This didn’t seam to stop most teams though, as the bite kicked off early and often for many. The worm bite was the best with greens and browns being dominant today. Many of our top fisherman said they were fishing in 10 -15 feet of water using shaky heads. There was also a fairly good jig bite for those patient enough to throw it.
Top honors went to Lakeport’s George Bates and Steve Kelly. George and Steve came in with a 5 fish limit weighing 25.61 pounds and included the big lunker of the day, a 9.40 Largemouth. Bates said during the awards ceremony, they caught all their fish on Shakey Heads using Watermelon Candy Worms from Maverick Lures. He also stated they fished 10-15 feet deep in several areas around Mid-Lake. For their efforts, they received a pair of nice plaques from Kosich & Callahan Insurance and a check for $1650. Congratulations to both for a great day of fishing
Second place went to veteran angler Danny Row and partner Sam KcKeen, both of Klamath Falls, Oregon. Danny’s long been know as one of the best Jig fisherman around and this day was no exception. Both partners used Black and Blue Stanley Jigs all day to end up with 5 fish that netted out at 23.86 pounds. They had a modest kicker of 5.80 pounds, which goes to show the quality of the fish Danny found. He did take the time to mention they fished the north end all day and thanked Powell Rods for their support. His exact words were, “These new Powell Jigs rods are the best I’ve ever fished”. I’m sure they will enjoy the $2280 they won also.
Finishing in third place was another tuff pair, Joe Pool of Lower Lake and Mike Rothstein of Kelseyville. There 5 fish of 23.63 pounds was anchored by the second biggest fish of the day, an 8.86 pound Hawg. Joe stated they fish the north end also and caught fish on a variety of baits, but the better fish came on LV500, Luck Craft Crankbaits. They took home $825 and a pair of those nice plaques.
Forth place went to a pair of really nice guys, Dave Church of Sonoma and John Kidder of Petaluma. They weighed in at 22.98 Lbs. and had the 5th biggest fish if the day, a 7.02 pound Largemouth. The reward for Dave and John was $920 while the fifth place check of $360 went to Bill Dabbs of Ukiah and Adam Martin of Upper Lake.
