Niapas/Schachton Win 2nd stop on Modesto Toyota Trail at New Melones Lake

Sunday was the 2nd stop of the year on the Modesto Toyota Mother Lode Region of 100% BASS. 83 teams checked in at Glory Hole Sports before driving down to the lake for what turned out to be a Beautiful day (Rain was originally forecast, but all we got were clouds and great fishing). Virtually everyone caught fish and most caught 3-5 limits of mixed Largemouth and Spotted Bass. There is no doubt that the fish are moving up. Many reported catch worm fish in 30 feet of water, but many also stated they got some good bites in less than 5 feet, including the highly sought after, Swimbait fish. There weren’t any monsters brought in but a good supply of 5-7 pound fish were caught.

This is the second win in a row for our champs. After winning Lake McClure in cold weather last month, Alex Niapas and Tom Schachton, of Angels Camp came back with a vengeance. At one time in the late 80’s, Tom held both the lake record for Largemouth Bass and Rainbow Trout, and one is for sure, he still knows how to catch the big ones. The 17.64 pound winning weight was anchored by the CYTOMAX big bass of the day, a very nice 7.99 pound Largemouth. Schachton told us at the awards, they caught all of their fish on Oxblood worms fishing the Main Lake in 5 – 30 feet of water. The only exception was the big one, it came in less than 4 feet of water on a Trout Colored Swimbait. The reward for repeating was a set of plaques from Modesto Toyota and a check for $8565, bringing their two month total to $17,580. Very, Very, Nice.

Second place went to former anglers of the year, Aaron Cole of Salida and Greg Allec of Modesto. These guys brought in 5 fish that fell short by less than 3 ounces, and weighed 17.46 for their 5 fish limit. Cole said at the awards they were committed to fishing shallow and they did. While they didn’t get as many bites in 5 – 15 feet, they got the right ones, fishing bottom baits, like Jigs, Brushhogs, and shakey worms. For their diligence they took home $3240 and a pair of those nice plaques.

Finishing in third were new comers Tom Lutz of Vacaville and Ash Twigg of Oakley. Just two short seasons ago these guys were anglers of the year for the Western Rookie League, and with hard work have stepped up to PRO fishing and are making an impact. Today they brought in 5 fish that totaled out 16.99 pounds and included a very nice 3.91 pound spotted bass. Tom told us they used Boyce Jigs all day long in a variety of brown flavors, but fished 10-30 feet of water and just moved them slow. He also stated, they spend the entire day in the Angels Creek Arm focusing on main points. Tom and Ash receive $1010 for the day.

Forth place went to long time and well recognized Pro Angler Norval Pimentel and his son Anthony, both from Modesto. They also had a nice spotted bass kick, weighing 4.09 pounds that anchored their limit of 14.84 pounds. The reward was $1770. Rounding out the top 5 were Troy Well of Ceres and son Todd Wells of Modesto. Their limit netted them $1560.

Special thanks to Shawn Redic of Modesto Toyota for bring us a beautiful Toyota Tundra Limited for display and also thanks for the gifts you presented to our anglers.
