FLW SERIES TO VISIT LAKE MEAD

National Guard Western Division tournament to feature top bass anglers from 13 states

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (April 21, 2010) – The FLW Series will visit Lake Mead in Las Vegas, Nev., May 5-8 for the second stop of the National Guard Western Division circuit. Hosted by the City of Henderson Department of Cultural Arts and Tourism, the tournament will feature as many as 300 top bass anglers casting for top awards of up to $56,000 in the Pro Division and a Ranger 177TR with a 90 horsepower Evinrude or Yamaha outboard in the Co-angler Division.

“Fishing has been incredible at Lake Mead recently,” said National Guard pro Tim Klinger of Boulder City, Nev., who has five FLW top-10 finishes at Mead. “The spawn is hot and heavy right now, and there have been some really nice stringers brought in, I caught nearly 20 pounds there last week.

“I think the biggest challenge for this tournament is going to be adjusting to the current water levels; the lake is being dropped by about a foot a week which is really going to mess with the fishes heads. The fish are going to be everywhere so they may be a little harder to locate and catch in a couple of weeks.

“There will be a lot of sight fishing going on; any kind of reaction bait should work well. If guys can find some brush that is still under cover they should do well. Targeting secondary points and the backs of pockets with ledges and big boulders, anything with good shade really, should produce well.”

According to Klinger the spawn started on Lake Mead over a month ago so most of the fish will be post-spawn and heading back to deeper water to chase the shad in 30-70 foot depths. He anticipates that the lake will continue to be dropped over the next couple of weeks as well.

Anglers will take off from Calville Bay-Forever Resorts-Concessioners of NPS located at HCR-30 in Las Vegas at 7 each morning. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday weigh-ins will also be held at the marina beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday’s final weigh-in will be held at the Henderson Civic Center & Water Street District located at 200 S, Water Street in Henderson beginning at 4 p.m.

Fans will be treated to a Family Fun Zone at the Civic Center prior to Saturday’s weigh-in from noon to 4 p.m. There will be a drawing for a $300 gift card and drawings for rod and reel combos will be held every 30 minutes during the event. Activities in the Family Fun Zone include a Ranger boat simulator and assorted fishing-themed games. All activities are free and open to the public.

In FLW Series competition, anglers are also vying for valuable points to qualify for the 2011 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing.

Coverage of the Lake Mead tournament will be broadcast in high-definition (HD) on VERSUS. “FLW Outdoors,” will air June 13 from 12:30 to 1:30 ET. “FLW Outdoors,” hosted by Jason Harper, is broadcast to approximately 500 million households worldwide.
