FLW COLLEGE FISHING WESTERN DIVISION TO HOST EVENT ON CALIFORNIA DELTA

Running the Tide May Win the Tournament, but Very Risky Move

STOCKTON, Calif. (June 2, 2010) – National Guard FLW College Fishing is headed to the California Delta for the third of four stops in the Western Division series. Forty collegiate teams will be competing for a top award of $10,000 to be split evenly between the school and bass fishing club.

“Fishing is going to be good, especially in June, you’ll see some really big fish caught,” said National Guard pro Justin Lucas of Montevallo, Ala., who recently moved from Folsom to Montevallo and grew-up on the Delta. “You really need to understand the tide on the Delta to do well. It can fluctuate between 2 - 4 ½ feet per day, which is a lot. The bass feed based on the tide; the tide makes current which pulls the bait fish into certain spots and the bass follow.

“I have tried running the tide in the past and have really gotten burned. You really have to know your stuff to be successful at it, I only know a few guys who can do it successfully. I think anglers will be better off trying to find a spot that has a lot of fish and to fish through the tide with a lot of different baits, just grind it out.

“And of course the Delta is home to flipping, you absolutely need to have that in your arsenal. There is so much cover for the fish to hide in and typically that is where you are going to reel in the 8 – 10 pound fish. The great thing about the Delta is that there are so many fish any bait you use will work; fish slow and be consistent.”

Anglers will take off from Morelli Park and Boat Launch located at 1025 West Weber Avenue in Stockton, Calif., at 6:30 a.m. Weigh-in will be held at the marina beginning at 2 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
