An answer for the "Dog Days" of Summer

CLEAR LAKE, Ca. – The summer months are often referred to by bass anglers as the “dog days of summer.” A phrase that actually dates back to Egyptians astrologers, who noticing that Sirius – the “dog star” could always be seen rising alongside the sun during the summer months, quickly surmised that the star provided extra heat and humidity to the air, which of course, they believed, made the days hotter.

In modern times, it is during these hot, so-called “dog days” of summer, that most bass anglers surmise bass head for deeper, cooler temperatures, where they are extremely difficult catch. And for most, only two choices exist. Either spend the day baking in the hot sun while you dropshot for fish that you know have moved to deeper water...or simply put away your bass boat for the summer and wait for the cooler temperatures of fall to arrive.

But hold on….you now have another choice.

Go get your boat, load it up with lots of Snag Proof frogs, giant buzzbaits, and rattlin’ Zara spooks, and get ready for an event that will help re-define the meaning of the so-called “dog days” of summer. That event is the Thunder Valley Outdoors/FPT – Elite 40 Elimination Event to be held Saturday, August 14 on massive Clearlake - going out of Redbud Park.

This will be a regular season, northern region Future Pro Tour team event that brings with it a unique challenge in that there will be two 6-hour weigh-in periods. In the first period, the entire field will blast off starting at safelight, with the first group of boats due in at appx 11:00am. While the first period weigh-in is going on from 11:00am–2:00pm, we will host a complete and FREE Tri-tip and chicken BBQ with all the fixins’and refreshments for all participants to enjoy, giving everyone a chance to cool-off, rest, and recharge during the hottest part of the day.

And now comes the challenging part...

At 2:00pm, only the top 40 teams – the Elite 40 will move on to the second round, carrying with them their first period’s weight totals. At 7:30pm, these Elite 40 top teams will report back to the weigh-in site, with their second period limit, and we will crown new champions based on the heaviest combined total weight for both periods! How deep the payout to the remaining portion of the Elite 40 field will, of course, be determined by the total amount of boats that participated in the event – per the regular payback matrix posted on FPT website.

Think about it…how often do you get the chance to fish in a tournament - in the summertime, where you are competing during those special summer hours where the top water bite is at its best! How many times have you fished in the late evening hours, got on a RIDICULOUS top water bite, and wished you were in a tournament?
