San Antonio, TEXAS - Competitors in the Cabela's Collegiate Big
Bass Bash were rewarded with dozens of prizes, courtesy of ACA and series
sponsors. Everyone left with gift cards from Cabela's, but first place angler
Andrew Nutt, and second place angler Dawson Lenz, certainly have the biggest
shopping spree in their future, each taking home $1,000 Cabela's gift cards.
Andrew also walked away with a new Yamaha EF 1000
Generator, making his 7.67 pound catch worth over $1,750, or roughly $220
"per pound".
Fortunately for Andrew, a Team Fenwick Pro Team Member, he and the University
of North Alabama support series sponsors, and it certainly paid off. As Andrew
put it, "There is an unbelievable amount of support for college anglers
available through these programs. Our team designed our jerseys around those
companies that support the ACA through the Discounts and Incentives Program in
hopes of picking up some extra winnings in 2013."
Andrew definitely achieved that goal in the first ACA event of the season. As a
registered member of Cabela's Angler Cash, another $250 gift card is heading
his way, and some cold hard cash is right behind it. The Lions' jerseys
included the Cabela's Collegiate Bass Fishing Series logo, which is good for
$500, courtesy of the ACA, and another $500 cash bonus, via the Costa bonus
program. Andrew won't have to worry about buying reels with his new found
fortune, since the big bass was landed on his Abu Garcia Revo, two new Revo STX
reels have his name on them as well. Last but certainly not least, the
award-winning jersey was designed by Gemini, earning him a new custom hoodie.
When asked what he planned on doing with all that cash and Cabela's support,
Andrew was quick to answer, "The first thing I'm buying is some new
Cabela's Guidewear, just in case I have to fish
another event like the Cabela's Collegiate Big Bass Bash. Man it was cold and
wet, so I want to make sure I'm better prepared for the next go around."
In total, contingency bonuses will net Andrew an Additional $2,000 in cash and
merchandise, making that one bite worth approximately $4,000 in cash and
prizes, or $520 "per pound" for those keeping track. Although Andrew
made a haul, he did leave some prizes up for grabs for the rest of the field.
Fellow UNA teammate Zachary Wiggers took the Lazer Trokar bonus of $1,000 in Trokar product and
merchandise for using their hooks throughout the event and displaying the
Trokar logo. Ranger will also be kicking in $250 for Zachary as part of the
Ranger Cup University program.
The Lions let one prize escape them, and Blake Deron
of the University of Louisiana Monroe, is thankful. Although his 6.42 pound
largemouth won first place in his session, it left him in sixth place overall,
which was the first place to not win an overall prize. Luckily for Blake, the
ULM Warhawks participate in the Yamaha contingency
program, and Blake is also a Yamaha owner. Collectively the bonus is worth
$1,000, which makes his sixth place finish as lucrative as a second place
finish.
According to Blake, "When I saw the big fish of the final session hitting
the scales, I felt like I was done. I knew I had a good fish, but not that
good. We stuck around to see the final weigh in, but at that point I was kind
of bummed out. I figured we got some good Cabela's School of the Year points
and that was about it. To hear my name called at the end for $1,000 prize was
absolutely awesome. The money will certainly come in handy and I'd like to
thank Yamaha for the support!"
"Support" is a reoccurring theme at all the events of the Cabela's
Collegiate Bass Fishing Series events. These no entry fee and no membership
events are about exactly that, supporting collegiate anglers and their passion
for fishing. These no entry fee events are open to all full-time students of
university-recognized programs. Competitions are broadcast as part of the
Cabela's Collegiate Bass Fishing Television Series, seen on the NBC Sports
Network and available to over 79 million homes.
