Stockton – Senator Cathleen Galgiani will be hosting an expert panel to discuss Water
hyacinth and Egeria densa.
The panel will include representatives from the Division of Boating and
Waterways, USDA, NASA, California Delta Chambers & Visitor’s Bureau, and
the Port of Stockton.
Due
to a combination of drought, higher water temperatures, and low upstream flows,
the San Joaquin Delta is experiencing an unprecedented infestation of invasive
aquatic weeds. The Delta, which contains roughly 1,000 miles of
waterways, is essential to the health and wellbeing of local businesses and
communities, serves as a resource for recreational activities, and supports
cherished ecosystems unique to California.
“Highly
proliferative weeds threaten the Delta by choking our waterways, clogging navigation
channels, and causing damage to marinas, fishing-related industries, and many
others dependent on this valued natural resource. To combat this issue, I
have called a town hall meeting to discuss the impact of invasive aquatic weeds
and what is being done to mitigate their presence in the Delta.”
The
town hall meeting will take place on Monday, December 15, 2014 from Noon to
1:30 p.m. at the State Building Auditorium, 31 E. Channel Street, in Stockton.
