Bass and stripers are chasing shad irst thingin the morning and are catchable every calm morning. Bass are taken along the shore line aroundstick ups and prominent rocky structure with surace poppers (Pop-r, Sugoi splash, chug bug).Cast near structure. Allow the lure to rest until ripples dissipate. Twitch once and rest. Twitchtwice and then work lure back to the boat in a steady chugging motion to tantalize bass. Stripers will be in open water. Watch or splashes and/or 2-3 swirls. The action may be verysubtle so concentrate on the water surace until you become adept at seeing the small signs. Individual ish splashes are probably carp but two or more splashes in close proximity are usuallystripers. A surace lure placed within the splash ripple created by the rolling ish will cause animmediate slash at your surace lure. (Excalibur Super Spook Jr., Zara spook, Jumpin

Report: LAKE POWELL FISH REPORTJuly 12, 2001 By Wayne Gustaveson Home Page: www.wayneswords.com Lake Elevation: 3671 Water Temperature: 77 - 83 FThe big news is VISIBLE stripers boils lake wide. While boils are seen almost everywhere atanytime o day, stripers are not as catchable as they will be in another week or two. Stripers areravenously chasing very small shad which are a small target. Stripers see shad, corner them butater the irst rush, shad scatter and stripers lose ocus. Then shad regroup and stripers ollowsuit. Stripers again rush orward and repeat the process time ater time. It has to be rustratingor stripers. They are expending great amounts o energy constantly chasing shad in warm wateror the small reward they get or catching an occasional one inch shad. Above the surace, anglers see small boils pop up all around. Stripers stay up long enough to getthe boat in range or one cast. Since stripers are searching or leeing shad instead o eating shadtrapped against the surace the regular dependable surace lures are not working well. Baitscranked down to represent leeing shad are more productive. Best baits or boils are small (+-3/4 ounce) silver and shad colored spoons, crank baits (at-ree shad, rattletrap, etc), and whitejigs in marabou and plastic.Timing o boils is slightly dierent than expected. These small boils are not ound at irst light butusually an hour ater daybreak. Shad wait or plankton to rise in the water column in response toincreasing daylight beore venturing out where stripers can see them. The boiling action persistuntil about 10 am. The whole process heats up again at 4 pm til dark. There will be an occasional big boil where stripers stay up and eat long enough to get the boatclose and catch more than one ish. Smallmouth will bite better or the irst angler ishing the shoreline eachday. There are so many miles o shore line that it is easy to ind an unished stretch at any giventime. Smallmouth ishing is still very good along main channel rocks, points, shelves and rees. Thesecondary points in canyons and coves are good too. Some midlake anglers are catching betterbass on spinnerbaits in the cloudy water in the brushy ends o coves. The most predictable patternis bouncing plastic grubs and tubes along the bottom around rocky structure in clear water. Crankbaits are working well at times and top water baits are great early morning and late evening. Lower and midlake stripers are moving and making a periodic sweep through a given home range. One day stripers in Navajo Canyon will be working the irst two points past the irst doubleislands just as they have been all spring. The next day they may be on dierent points in closeproximity and the third day may ind them in shallow water (30 eet) near the back o the canyon. Then they retrace the route and start over again. They are not bashul about eating once theschool is located. Chumming and ishing bait, spooning with vertical jigs, trolling with crank baitsall work to locate schools. The best method o catching big numbers o ish is bait ishing withlots o chumming once the general location o a holding school is ound. You may have to ind anew school each day but when you do the catch is well worth while. Periodically check spots thathave produced all spring to see i the school has returned to that location. Don

Report: LAKE POWELL FISH REPORTJune 7, 2001 By Wayne Gustaveson Home Page: www.wayneswords.com Lake Elevation: 3671 Water Temperature: 71-75 FRuno continues and increases lake level 3-4 inches per day. Filling will continue or at least 2more weeks. Antelope launch ramp is now useable although not oicially opened. Piute Farmsaccess is still not in service. Dritwood at Hite is thinning out and not the problem it was lastweek. Muddy water at Hite continues downstream as ar as the horn above Good Hope Bay. Mud rom the San Juan stops near Copper Canyon and water clarity improves in Zahn Bay. Stripers are moving into summer time eeding patterns but schools are still running the wallsduring mid day hours throughout the lake. Stripers can be taken by chumming with anchoviesnear main channel and main canyon points, shelves and islands. Chum (3-5 anchovies) and wait10 minutes. I no action move to another spot in close proximity. Stripers will usually hit aschum descends. Let your bait all at the same rate chum descends or best results. Using a smallsplit shot or no weight other than a 2 inch chunk o anchovy has proven to be very eective thisweek. It takes patience to let the bait all the 5 minutes it takes to reach 25 eet but the reward isconsistent. Ater the bait reaches 30 eet reel in and drop again. Keep the bait moving.Stripers hit at the dam, power plant intake and Navajo canyon points or a short time each dayand in good numbers every 3rd or 4th day. Try or midlake stripers at Moki wall, Moki canyon andCrystal Springs. Many other walls and main channel points are good. Uplake stripers have beenreported in White and Red Canyon.

Tips: Stripers will make an early morning run into shallow water to ind spawning shad. They can becaught on surace lures, crankbaits and spoons bounced on the bottom. Find shad and stripersand other predators will be nearby. Spawning and eeding begins at dawn and subsides as the sunhits the water. Get up beore daylight or the best action. Smallmouth action has slowed rom excellent (ish behind every rock) to good (ish behind everyith rock). I noticed a change in aggressiveness. Last week smallmouth were inhaling sot plasticgrubs. Report: LAKE POWELL FISH REPORTMAY 10, 2001 By Wayne Gustaveson Home Page: www.wayneswords.com Lake Elevation: 3663 Water Temperature: 62-68 FWarm weather has returned. This warm spell has started snowmelt runo which will increaselake level, turbidity and stimulate plankton growth. Warm calm weather means that stripers willsoon spawn and then move away rom places they have been caught all spring. Bass havespawned again. Conditions are prime or good ishing. Striped bass are ound in smaller groups but in many more locations with decreasing catchescoming rom lower lake staging areas. The dam and power plant are still steady with averagecatch being 10-20 ish per boat or a day o ishing. Schools are moving along the walls and canbe ound anywhere in the main channel or long canyons between Wahweap and Hite. Shad havenot spawned yet and are not abundant. Look or striped bass near main channel points withbroken rubble rock where they can orage or crayish. Steep clis oer no reason or striperschools to stop moving until they come to a spot that might provide ood. Fish points, ledges andisolated rough areas in smooth textured terrain. Chumming 5 inely chopped anchovies at eachspot will get stripers started i they are present. Driting anchovies or trolling in o-colored waterin the backs o canyons (30-40 eet) is another good way to locate a shallow eeding school.

Tips: Four tagged stripers have been turned in during the million dollar ish contest which runs untilMay 24th. They were caught at the power plant intake, Navajo canyon, upper San Juan andmouth o Halls Creek. Smallmouth bass have spawned again. The irst two spawns involved larger individuals. Younger, shorter ish have built new nests near spots that larger ish have used or the past twoweeks. Look or soil on slick rock ledges. Bass an away soil until only the rock is let. Thenthey build the nest. Virtually any area that provides pebble size broken rock is now occupied bysmallmouth bass. All broken rock habitats are now working or smallmouth - submerged rees, boulder rock, any rock slide on the edge adjoining the cli ace, rocky coves and cuts and slots incanyons. I hesitate to say they are behind every rock but that

Report: LAKE POWELL FISH REPORTMAY 3, 2001 By Wayne Gustaveson Web page: www.wayneswords.com Lake Elevation: 3662 Water Temperature: 59-66 FIt would be hard to visualize ishing conditions and results that were any better than thoseexperienced this past week. Bass moved into the shallows en mass to spawn. Stripers were verycooperative, particularly in the lower lake, with warming water enhancing the spawning instinct. Walleye were caught in large numbers in the upper lake. The Million Dollar Striper contest started May 1st and will run through May 24th. Stripers weretagged (25 ish) last week and evenly distributed between Hite and Wahweap. Tagged ish willrejoin existing schools and move throughout the reservoir. During the May spawning season it isnot uncommon or stripers to move over 100 miles in a three week period. So ish where stripersare congregated or the best chance o capturing a tagged ish. Stripers are attracted to currentand will run upriver to lowing water. Increased current and temperature induce spawning. TheColorado and San Juan river mudlines are good bets or trolling up good numbers o stripers. Inmuddy water use a highly visible long, minnow-shaped lure that will run at least 15 eet deep(wally diver type lures). Troll ast, at least 3-4 mph (1100 rpms) or best results.Stripers spawn in the main lake in the absence o current. A sudden increase in temperaturetriggers emales to spawn but males continually move to long prominent points near prespawnstaging areas where stripers have been caught all spring. Large schools o males can be locatedby concentrating on isolated points especially in areas where steep clis are the main habitat type. Check points in main channel between dam and power plant, Navajo Canyon, steep cli wall nearCookie Jar in Padre Bay, Boy 23 in Padre Bay, Last Chance and Rock Creek in the lower lake.Halls Creek and Moki wall midlake. Report: LAKE POWELL FISH REPORTAPRIL 26, 2001 By Wayne Gustaveson Home Page: www.waynewords.com Lake Elevation: 3662 Water Temperature: 55-65 FWarming has begun anew ollowing a week o cool weather and wind. Fish have respondedaccordingly with bass resuming their spawn and stripers hitting with more regularity. The hottest spot or striped bass is the power plant intake. The dam is good at times but ishingspace is limited with most ish caught on the visitors center side o the barricade by the irst 4 or 5metal buoys. The cli walls in between the dam and intake hold many ish that travel betweenthe two sites. Large prespawn striper schools move in and out during the day. When they are in, most anglerscatch ish in a hurry. The activity period is usually 3 hours long. Activity begins according to thewhim o the stripers. It varies rom early to late. On April 25th it was best rom noon to 4 PM.During the last warming trend mid day to aternoon was best. Then as temperature stabilized themorning period was best ishing. A patient angler willing to wait out the dry spells will berewarded with 30 ish when they start to bite. This is one o the ew times that I recommendwaiting instead o looking or inactive stripers. Tips that may help while waiting or ish to startbiting include moving to dierent spots along the intake wall. Inactive ish were more likely to hita bait that was slowly descending between 45 and 60 eet and usually on the irst cast. Movealong the wall, cast oten, use just enough weight to get the bait down to 60 eet. Chumming isgood. Amount o chum invested usually correlates well with number o ish caught at the end othe day. Uplake, stripers are biting well at the mudline which is ound near the mouth o North Wash. Trolling rattletraps and wally divers and driting anchovies at 40 eet is working well with largerstripers (up to 10 pounds) moving rom the lake toward the headwaters or spawning purposes. . Bass resumed spawning on April 23rd. There is one group o bass that spawned right beore thestorm. These eggs are now hatching and males will be guarding ry. The second group will bespawning and very aggressive this week. Another group has yet to spawn and will do so soon. With all bass trying to spawn ish those areas that provide spawning habitat. Steep, deeprockslides good in summer are not the area o choice. Look on points, ledges, terraces in waterrom 2-10 eet deep. Short coves o the main canyon with broken rock structure are the hotspots. Avoid deep drops and silty areas. Most canyons have a sand bottom with slick rock sides.Look on the sides or broken rock and soil to ind bass nests. Presence o brush enhances theprospect o catching a largemouth.Crappie will begin to spawn this week Their numbers are not large but the next two weeks willbe the best time to ind them. Release the dark black males to protect the nest and provide morecrappie or next year.

Report: LAKE POWELL FISH REPORTAPRIL 19, 2001 By Wayne Gustaveson Home Page: www.wayneswords.com Lake Elevation: 3662 Water Temperature: 57-65 FThe irst black bass nests were seen on April 18 in Wahweap Bay. Bass spawning will ensue orthe next two weeks depending on how the next storm ront plays out. Cold winds will mix andcool the water and bass will abandon nests and pull back out to deep water. Light winds andcontinued warm air temperature means that bass will guard nests, be shallow and extremelycatchable. Early morning water temperatures are still in the high 50's ollowing night timecooling. By mid aternoon the entire lake is above 60 F. Aternoon ishing is much better than morning ishing or all species. Black bass are coming veryshallow to sun themselves and to seek nest sites. Most bass will be caught rom 2 to 15 eet deep. Since bass are poised or spawning, ish or them along the deep water edge o a rocky lat orterrace. Once the nest is built male bass will stay in the shallows. Females will be in closeproximity but deeper, usually just over the edge where visibility decreases. Males are superaggressive or the irst 2-3 days ater eggs are deposited. Then they become more docile witheach passing day. It is a good idea to release bass and crappie obviously caught guarding a nest.I the male is removed, all ish hatched will be lost to predation. The inherent desire to protect thenest and ry is what makes bass so aggressive and easy to catch.Prespawn striped bass are attracted to current created by the dam and power plant intake. Anchovy bait suspended at 40 eet is working to provide anglers about 10-30 ish per trip. Aternoon ishing rom 3 PM till dark is the best. Look all along the wall rom the dam to theintake during the mid day slowdown. Light line, small hooks and a one inch chunk o anchovy ona carolina rig (sinker 18 inches above the hook) is the best rigging method. Stripers are attracted to the current o the Colorado and San Juan river inlows but they are not aseasy to ind as those stacked up in ront o the dam. Trolling the mudline at Hite is a goodstarting point. Graphing and trolling across main channel points anywhere midlake is a good wayto ind a prespawn striper school. The irst ripe male striped bass was seen on April 18thollowing the rapid rise in surace water temperature. Males stage on long points waiting or ripeemales. Females spawn at dusk and just ater dark. When in spawning mode striper activity ismuch greater aternoon and evenings than mid day. Cooling will chase stripers back to prespawnholding areas. Continued warming will cause a move away rom holding areas to spawningpoints. As usually happens in the spring, tomorrow

Report: LAKE POWELL FISH REPORTAPRIL 12, 2001 By Wayne Gustaveson Home Page: www.wayneswords.com Lake Elevation: 3662 Water Temperature: 52-58 FWinter weather will inally blow away by Easter weekend. Amount and duration o warming willdictate intensity o the black bass bite. Striped bass activity is directly related to amount osunlight - not necessarily lake warming.Prespawn striped bass in the lower lake are gathering near current created at the dam and powerplant intake. Direct sun enhances striper attraction and activity levels. It seems that the besttimes to catch stripers at both locations is between 9 am and 2 pm (MST). Stripers may not showup at all on cloudy, windy days. But when the sun comes out stripers ollow. Expect big catcheso stripers at both locations on Easter weekend and the week ollowing. When large schools start to bite it is diicult NOT to catch them. As the eeding periodprogresses, stripers get selective and anglers using certain techniques tend to catch more ish. Iam still working on the very best technique or catching stripers in heavily ished areas but theseare some on the variables that work. Light line (or less visible line), probably smaller than 8pound test seems to catch more ish. Large anchovy hooks are NOT a good choice. It seems asmaller bait hook completely covered by a chunk o anchovy is better. More ish are caught on asmall piece o anchovy than on a whole ish. Quarter ounce jig heads in highly visible colors workwell at times. Sometimes adding a plastic grub to the jig head beore putting the chunk oanchovy on the hook works better. I you preer to reel slowly then the movement o the grubwould draw attention to the bait. I you preer to hold the bait stationary then a carolina riggedanchovy would be better. Very active ish will be shallow - usually about 5 eet below the pointwhere a bait disappears rom view. Resting ish are deeper and it may take a bait ished at 50-60eet to get a school started. Chumming a ew pieces o bait every 5-10 minutes keeps stripers byyour boat.Uplake stripers are being caught trolling near Hite and incidentally to bass ishing at midlake. The next time water warms to 60 degrees (irst temperature listed at top o report) black bass willspawn. Cool weather ollowed by abrupt warming will put spawning bass in the shallows at thesame time. Three days o sustained warm air temperatures ater the water warms to 60 degreeswill create excellent ishing. Gradual warming will mean scattered spawning and only goodishing. Crappie, bluegill and walleye ishing will improve as soon as water temperatures reach 60 degrees.

Fortunately the entire upper layer is now starting to warm so all o the heat was not lost. Bass spawning was delayed and will now occur the next time water temperatures top 60 degrees. Abrupt warming ollowing a cold spell allows bass to nest and spawn simultaneously resulting ingreat ishing. Continued cold stormy weather means that bass will spawn haphazardly usuallyover an extended time period resulting in only air ishing. No spawning has yet occurred. Continuedwarm, calm weather could produce a spawning movement as early as next week. Storm rontscan hold o the spawning event or as much as three weeks. Fishing patterns all directly relate toprespawn ish behavior.Black bass are the most active ish. They will hold in deep water near the edge o the channel orin the back o the canyon where rock and brush are present. Bass move shallow with dailywarming to seek a nest site. Feeding occurs but nest construction is a higher priority. Hence, many ish will be seen in clear water or near the surace in stained water. They may not strikeaggressively at lures except or a 1-2 hour period usually in the aternoon. During the remaindero the day, especially in cool morning temperatures they will only peck at lures or ignore them. Individuals can be convinced to strike occasionally and there are enough ish visible lake wide toproduce a really un experience. More numbers will be caught next month but now is the time tocatch larger bass. Large males occupying nest sites and nearby emales holding in deeper waterare the prime targets. Bottom-contact plastic lures are preerred but crank baits, spinner baits, andjerk baits all work at times in prespawn conditions.Prespawn striped bass eel warming and tend to move in schools toward current. Places like thedam and power plant intake are getting better with some really good sporadic catches reported inshort bursts already. When a school is nearby most anglers catch ish. Then there is a waitingperiod until the school returns. Mid day has been best but appearance o the large school canhappen any time. Stripers in the backs o canyons move toward the shallows on a daily basis. Still the schools areinactive most o the time and can be ound laying on the bottom. Report: LAKE POWELL FISH REPORTMARCH 1, 2000BY Wayne GustavesonHome Page: www.wayneswords.comLake Elevation:3664 Water Temperature: 46-51 FBass tournaments occurred almost every weekend during February. Early tournament resultswere meager with less than hal o the teams catching a 12 inch keeper bass, usually largemouth. Finally in the most recent contest 13 o 16 teams entered ish. While ishing or bass remainstough it is gradually improving as day length increases. It seems the chances o catching a ish isnow greater than the chance o not catching one. But it might not be possible to catch two. The spring pattern involves looking in the back o the canyon where brown water meets greenwater especially near brush. Warm aternoons are better than cold mornings especially where ahuge rock ace has a southern exposure to the sun and can collect the aternoon heat and transmitit into the water. Start shallow by tossing (1/8 to 1/4 ounce) sot plastic or hair jigs to shore linerocks, gradually working deeper with a slow bouncing retrieve. I no action try a loat 5-10 eetup rom the jig. This suspends your slow moving bait in a (non threatening) horizontal plane thatcold weather bass and crappie ind appealing. For stripers, turn around and throw to the middleo the canyon instead o the shoreline. Let the bait go to the bottom (30-50 eet) and then work itnear the bottom or slow moving stripers and walleye. Use crayish colors near shore and shadcolors in deeper water.Keep moving and repeating the techniques in the "green water" section o canyon. You caninclude your avorite methods by tossing a crankbait, or slow rolling a spinner bait or lippin
