Barrett

Barrett Reservoir is located in a remote area approximately 35 miles east of San Diego. As a result of low rainfall and runoff totals in recent years the reservoir is low and well below the 811 acres of surface area it boasts at capacity.

Construction of the dam at Barrett was completed in 1922 and formed an important midway control point for water flow into Lower Otay downstream.

The lake's regulations call for the use of barbless artificial lures only and the release of all fish in this "zero kill" fishery.

These regulations were designed primarily to protect the last significant population of northern-strain largemouth black bass in the area. In virtually all other waters in Southern California, these fish have been replaced by the Florida-strain version of largemouth black bass. Other species include bluegill, bullheads, and both white and black crappie. Threadfin shad and silverside minnows are the primary forage fish.

From Highway 94, turn west on Honey Springs Road, right on Lyons Valley Road, 1.7 miles to the gate.

Report: The overall report about the lake level posted above is years old and inaccurate. Last year the lake went way up due to heavy rains in San Diego, as well as most other lakes down here, and recent rains might help keep it at the 75% it's been hoover at. Detailed info and updates on lake levels on my site, link on left side. http://www.seewald.com/bass_fishing_tips_southern_california.htm

Report: 1st time loat tubin here. Great way to stay on the ish. Got 130+...most by workin 4" drop shot worms and senkos (lighter colors, greens) slowly in 10-12' o water, just outside the weed edges. Also some pig/jig ish. Most were post-spawners, not that active, but bunched up so i you located one you got 6 to 10 more in the exact same spot. We seemed to do better than boaters because the ish were not active and boaters drited past too ast. Awesome day, as always.

Tips: Slow, deliberate presentaion in the post spawn..get the bait in their ace, shake it and eel or a "pressure" bite.
