New Hogan

New Hogan Lake is located at an elevation of 713 feet in the Sierra Nevada foothills just 35 miles east of Stockton. It has 4,400 surface acres and 50 miles of oak and pine covered shoreline.

The lake's facilities include three campgrounds, day-use and picnic areas, launch ramps and a marina.

The lake supports a fine year-round warm-water fishery, with striped bass the most sought after trophy. The stripers run 25-35 feet deep in the winter, making trolling with lures the way to catch them. During the early spring, drifting minnows 15-20 feet deep is most successful. In summer and fall heat, the stripers are very close to the surface chasing shad. Anglers can catch stripers by casting lures near the surface where the fish are feeding, or by trolling and drifting minnows deeper.

Angling regulations allow the taking of five stripers per day without the size limits that are enforced elsewhere.

Catfishing is very popular year-round, with shore anglers and boaters alike taking them on chicken livers, anchovies, clams and nightcrawlers. The mouth of the river and most coves are the best place to tie into that big one.

James Puricelli caught this lake record 31.5 pound striped bass from New Hogan Lake.

Spring angling for crappie and bass is best in the shallows of most coves and around submerged trees.

The Calaveras River below New Hogan Dam is completely closed for salmon angling, but is open to trout angling year-round.

The area has plenty of tent and RV camping as well as on board boat camping in some designated areas as long as you have a sealed waster holding tank. There is a 15 mpg speed limit ont he lake at night.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers boasts of over 150 different species of birds in this area, amking it great for bird watching as well as hiking on the varied nature trails

Report: Targeted largemouth and smallmouth with little success. Came across a striper boil around 1130 and caught two using a rip bait and crankbait. Largest was 2lbs/22in. Boil lasted about 2 minutes. Another boat hooked into a quality fish to about 6 pounds (also stumbled onto the boil). Caught two largemouth to 3# on dropshot at the mouth of coves in 15ft of water. Bites were VERY light and I missed a few more fish with the same setup above. The water is cold and the bites are few. Also caught a couple small largemouth 8in or so. Missed a few bites on crank baits and spinner baits when we first started. We started fishing around 0930 thinking the warmer weather would spark a bite. It's still pretty cold. Where are the smallmouth and where are the big fish? Send me an email......

Tips: Drop shot the mouths of coves. Let the fish take worm for a moment. Bites are light.
