TRAILS GALORE
Redding has a trail for anything you could imagine. With more than 225 miles of trails in a 15-mile ra - dius, you won’t run out of places to hike, bike, walk, run, or ride. The Sacramento River National Recre - ation Trail bends 17.4 miles on the riverbank through lush vegetation and wildlife habitats from Shasta Dam to the internationally acclaimed Sundial Bridge. The stunning, 710-foot glass-decked suspension and pedestrian bridge connects the famous trail known as the crown jewel of Redding’s trails, which was praised by the San Francisco Chronicle as the “gem of the U.S. trail system.” For the thrill-seekers, the Chappie-Shasta Off-Highway Vehicle Area near Shasta Lake lets you shred another 250 miles of trails while taking in unrivaled views of rolling hills and mountains that feature panoramic views of the Sacra - mento River, Shasta Dam, Mt. Shasta, Lassen Peak, and the Trinity Alps.
ROOM TO ROAM
Five national park designations and nine state parks offer a variety of ways to explore within a close proximity to Redding. McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park certainly tops the awe-inspiring list as Theodore Roosevelt once called it the “eighth wonder of the world.” Underground springs flow into a 129-foot waterfall that pumps out more than 100 million gallons of water daily into an aquamarine pool. The hiking trails all around the falls, including a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail, make it a year-round popular attraction. With 50 waterfalls within an hour drive of Redding, it would be near impossible to see them all in one trip. But you can cross four off your list by going to the Whiskeytown National Recre - ation Area. Bike around the lake or hike to any of the four cascading falls reaching up to 220 feet tall, one of which is ADA accessible and paved all the way to the clear pool at the base. Nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park features freckled meadows of wildflowers, streams and lakes, and fascinating hydrother - mal wonders. Lassen Peak, California’s only active volcano, calls the park home as does steaming vents and bubbling mud pots. In the winter, free ranger-led guided cross-country ski and snowshoe tours are available. Experience the results of the volcanic activity closer to Redding by touring some of the most beautiful limestone caves in the country at Lake Shasta Caverns National Natural Landmark. The tour takes you on a cruise across Shasta Lake on a catamaran, up the mountain and then underground to see nature’s marvel that dates back to 250 million years ago.
ON THE WATER
With the Sacramento River running right through the city center, and the abundance of rivers and lakes around, Redding is a paddler’s dream. TIME Magazine labeled Redding as the “unofficial capital of kay - aking” for its “weird obsessions” for all things with a paddle. Whiskeytown Lake offers year-round en - joyment, but the activity builds up in the summer with free guided kayak and standup paddleboard tours. It’s also the top spot for sailing where you can race away from the sandy shore to a tree-lined horizon of unspoiled beauty. Shasta Lake isn’t only known for fishing. You can tie the waterski, wakeboard, or tube to your boat and rip up the water for an all-day escapade.\ More for the adrenaline seekers, paddle your way through the rapids of the Trinity River with guided white water rafting trips.
