It opened his eyes to what may be possible when the tour goes north, not just by keeping him dialed in on how to read current, but also in expanding his tackle horizons.

“They were crushing a 10XD, really choking it,” he said. “And their mouths are not any bigger than a smallmouth’s. It got me thinking, why wouldn’t a smallmouth eat a 10XD?”

The trip excited Lintner for the northern swing, and got him ready for more such opportunities. He strongly desires to land both a mahi mahi and a bluefin tuna.

The only downside to developing an offshore addiction, he said, is that the weather sometimes gets worse than anything Lake Erie or Toledo Bend

can dish out, and even

though the boats can

handle the rough stuff,

“it takes some of the

fun out of it when

you’re falling over as

you try to fish.”

Even inclement

weather has benefits,

though, allowing him

to put some of the

newest clothing from

AFTCO to the test.

While it benefits his career, most of all it’s just fun.

“With bass fishing, you may have those days when you catch 20, 30 or 50 fish,” he explained. “But more often than not, you don’t catch that many. That’s why I go bottom fishing, where once you find them and figure out the bite it’s common to catch 100 to 200 a day. My kids love it, too. It’s not dragging a jig around hoping that in an hour you’ll catch one. It’s a lot more entertaining. Getting the bite – that’s why I started all this.”
