Dropshot worms and swimbaits are an effective way to attract feeding bass that are preying upon perch, crappie and other baitfish.
Size seems to be more important than color matching, but going basic can really pay off in terms of quality of fish. I stick to natural white colors and/ or perch imitators such as Roboworm’s Straight Tail, Strike King’s Dreamshot and Yamamoto’s Pro Senko. All three of these soft plastics move quickly throughout the water column, cause the least amount of resistance, but move and quiver with the lightest of rod movements.
Small swimbaits, or what I call DSS baits (dropshot swimbaits) are a maximum of 4-inches in length and can be similar to the worms mentioned above, but are thicker in profile and more accurate when it comes to mimicking specific kinds of baitfish. These baits would include Berkley’s Twitchtail Minnow, Keitech’s Sexy Impact and Yamamoto’s Shad Shape worm.
PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE
Reading your electronics and delivering your bait to your target can often be an enormous task depending on weather conditions. Fishing deep such as 20- or 25-feet or more means that in most circumstances, your boat position will not scare of intimidate the fish you are targeting.
