There is little debate that a comparable glass blank will typically weigh slightly more than a graphite blank. Cunningham is quick to point out that static weight is not overly important to him when he evaluates how a rod will perform. “It’s not necessarily the weight in your hand, it’s the weight beyond your hand that makes or breaks a rod as far as how it feels. I like to swing the blank, it’s the swing weight that determines the feel.” said Cunningham.

Regardless of blank composition, there are a number of incremental factors that come into play that can impact how well a finished rod will feel and perform. Included are such items as: handle diameter and length, number of guides and guide placement. Any one of these elements can either make or break the proper balance of the rod.
