let’s just get this out

of the way. Rattles can

make a real difference if the water is dirty or the bass are unsure in thick cover.

HEAD TYPES

There are so many jig head types flooding the market today. To walk into a tackle shop in search of a jig can be overwhelming. Don’t think for a minute think all jigs are created equal. I’m going to discuss four, in my opinion, main types of jig heads: football, flipping (aka Arkie), round ball and swim and then let you in on my jig secret.

FOOTBALL JIG-HEAD

The football jig is shaped just as it sounds, like a football. The reason for this is, it gives the jig a wide head profile that helps it roll over rocks instead of sliding into a crevice. Keep in mind this does not prevent getting snagged, it only gives you a better chance at not.

These jigs are often available in heavier sizes, which makes it a great option for casting and fishing deep dragging it along the bottom. Typically these jigs are fished with a steady sideways drag like a Carolina- rig.

Occasional strokes up off the bottom to get a reaction bite are also key. Think of football jigs like the 4-wheel drive version of jigs. By that I mean, the wide head of the football head allows them to wobble and crawl across rough bottom substrate such as gravel and rocks that other jigs would
