directed down and out to the sides of the boat. The effective range covers a total width of 600-ft (300-ft to port, and 300-ft to starboard). By increasing the number of elements in the transducer for transmitting multiple signals and receiving them, coupled with new software contained in a black box module, a Lowrance Gen3 unit is capable of processing the huge amount of data and display it in three dimensions. The 3D image is achieved by more than one sonar signal bouncing off the same object. The result is a clear picture of the bottom structure and fish that requires no explanation.

become more enjoyable since the user will now understand what the sonar is showing them. One way the 3D uniquely simplifies the display is to show a picture of the coverage fan of sonar signals.

Previous sonar units displayed images of actual fish and baitfish in colors that represented other purposes as well, especially the bottom. To the untrained eye, many of these fish go unnoticed, especially those near structure and cover. With StructureScan 3D, all suspended fish and bait are displayed in a contrasting color that is easily visible by anyone.

Like modern computer’s, the ability to rotate, pan, and tilt any image with a touch of your finger, makes it even easier to determine where bait and fish are located with relation to your boat position. It helps you see the vertical height of objects, or the depth of a creek channel.

Because the StructureScan 3D is data intensive, it only works on Lowrance HDS Gen3 units that have a powerful processor capable of handling the huge volume of information. This is not intended for high speed use, but rather for cruising and trolling speeds (optimum speed under 10 mph). Otherwise you could outrun your coverage.

Even experienced sonar users will benefit from 3D technology. Subtle bottom variations are more easily noticed. If you target shell beds, creek mouths, rocky bottoms, or weed beds you will see these more easily than previously possible.

Less experienced sonar users will quickly be knowledgeable of underwater secrets that before would have taken years to learn. Sonar use will

Even without the 3D imagery, the StructureScan improvements over the LSS-2 and LSS-1 are well worth the upgrade. Users describe the image enhancement and range improvement to be normal
