once the flow cranks up, those bass will scatter and begin moving to their backwater spawning areas.

Along the way, those bass will hit up and hide behind current breaks. Breaks give bass a chance to rest up (out of the current) and pick off food as the current pushes it by. Once those bass are ready and the water temperatures are right, they’ll make that final push to their spawning areas.

To cover water quickly, while targeting largemouth, I like to slow roll a single Colorado blade or Colorado/Indiana tandem bladed War Eagle spinnerbait around deep wood and on points. Depending on the water depth and the current, I’ll use a ¼- to ½-oz spinnerbait.

SLOWING DOWN

Once I locate a sweet spot, that has a lot of cover or a school of active bass, I’ll slow down and deploy my dual 12’ Minn Kota Talon’s and fish a ½-oz black/ blue jig with a Zoom Super Chunk on the back.

The jig’s versatility allows it to be cast a distance and drug back or flipped to visible cover. The Wright & McGill Victory Pro Carbon Jig 7’4” rod allows me to present my jig either way. This time of year, I typically cast it out and drag it along a sand point that is acting as a current break for smallmouth. These current breaks can be a staging area for them or even a spawning spot.

TIPS

Keep in mind, there are times when the bass won’t be biting, but not because they are gone – only because they are inactive due to a cold front. In this circumstance, fishing slow and presenting your bait from multiple angles can get those bass to bite.

As you begin your quest for spring bass on your favorite lake or river, be aware that those bass you find will move. Be ready to pick up a reaction bait and cover water to relocate those fish. It may take some time, but once you get that bite dialed back in, you will have a rewarding day on the water, knowing you were able to stay in front of spring bass.
