Considering the close contact and heavy tackle inherent to this game, punching can become something of a jack-in-the-box deal. The anticipation breeds edginess, but don’t go crazy on the hook sets. if you yank too hard and too fast, there’s a good chance that you’ll actually pop the fish’s mouth open by whacking that big weight into its lips before the hook takes hold. a better reaction is to simply come tight on the fish and lean back with a firm, but controlled movement. No doubt, you’ll need a stout rod and sturdy line (65-pound braid is common) but visibility is a double- edged sword for punchers. on one hand, high-vis lines – bright yellows, greens, reds, etc. – help anglers monitor their lines for the slightest twitches that may indicate a subtle bite. on the other hand, these bold colors quickly alert the bass that something is amiss. California punching pro Ken Mah addresses this dilemma with a “best of both worlds” solution. The bright yellow surface of his Power Pro Super Slick braid provides a narrow focal point, but he eliminates any advantage for the fish by darkening the bottom six feet of his line with a black permanent marker. Not only does the darker line blend in with the shadowy punch realm; it also provides an instant depth reference, as Mah simply notes how much of his darkened 6-foot section remains above the mat. if that darkened line suddenly twitches or stops, it’s hammer time. 3037 Twin View Blvd. Shasta Lake, Ca.96019
