“Now, they’ve gone

beyond that with the ultra-high reels that pick up more than 30 inches per turn like the Chronarch Ci4 which picks up 32 inches per crank.”

MATCH THE APPLICATION

Mah matches the application in which he will use the reel with the appropriate IPT for the technique. “If I want to crank with it, then I’m going to go with less line pick up and if I’m going to throw a buzzbait, topwater or trap then I want to go to more line pick up,” he explained.

He also noted that the higher ratio reels, weren’t only for reaction baits and could be used to make an angler more efficient with any technique that required really long casts. “Think about when you’re throwing a football head jig, making really long casts on 10 lb test and your spot is the size of a car,” said Mah. “After you’ve worked your jig 15 or 20 ft past your rock pile, you’re going to reel it back in. How long is that going to take, if you’re cranking up 23 inches at a time?

If you’re sitting in 30 ft of water Carolina rigging and you’ve made a 50 yard cast, do you want to reel it in with 23 inches per crank or 35 inches per crank? It just makes sense for less work, less time, which makes more casting opportunities and that is what makes you more efficient.”

OTHER FACTORS

If the budget allows, external features, materials and weight of the reel can become determining factors for Mah. Trying to decipher the list of amenities that each reel offers can be complicated. Mah broke it down with these simple tips that he applies in his choices.

A direct nemesis of sensitivity is weight. For that reason, picking a reel produced from materials that reduces weight would be the next thing that I would look at, but that increases cost.

The braking system controls the tension on the spool when casting. External adjustments of the braking system can be a benefit, but something that is designed so that it is not in the way of holding the reel is most important. You don’t want to accidently bump it.

Drag comes down to how much pressure the reel is rated at from a direct pull. Manufacturers are making reels with more than enough drag than we need for what we are doing, so it isn’t something that makes or breaks a reel choice.

As far as ball bearings, more does not always mean better.
