Reflecting on a double shot of quality bass on the same spot, Hawk observed: “There’s deeper water accessible – at four feet deep, it’s one of the deepest spots in this marina. It’s basically the back of the bay, but it’s a really predominant point that comes out.

“So, as these fish move up and down along the bank, that’s going to be a great crossroads for them. They’re going to position on that every time they come down the bank.”

Another point of discussion had to do with the fish’s super shallow positioning. This August day was just as hot as you’d expect, but Hawk surmised that the fish were tolerating the warmth for the benefit of feeding.

“As the day progressed, I (was casting) consistently shallower and shallower,” he said. “I was literally casting the lure on the bank and bringing it off because the fish were biting within two feet of the bank in zero to two feet.

“I think that because the water was so stained that to be able to feed effectively, they have to get light penetration. They have to be able to see.”
