You can choose glass lenses for the utmost clarity, or go plastic for superior vision and lightweight performance.

RESERVOIRS

Reservoirs often have a mix of largemouth and smallmouth bass, so the approach can be different depending on which species you are targeting.

Many anglers will find points and start with a dropshot out of the gate. This is a great way to pick up a mix of fish.

If the fish are in a competitive environment, you may notice a lack of quality. One trick to avoid catching these smaller fish over and over is to either upgrade the size of your bait, or increase the weight, such as going with a heavier dropshot weight, nose weight, etc.

Getting through the smaller fish will allow some of the larger bronzebacks a chance at your lure – it is a trick I have been successfully using for several years.

If the fish tend to be focusing on ledges or outside weedlines, crankbaits can help any reaction angler when it comes to filling out a limit or culling smaller fish from the livewell.

With a graphite rod and a crankbait, such as the Megabass Diablo Spec R, the angler can approach a weedbed from all angles and literally rip the edge with treble hooked baits. Forcing a reaction bite is the sole purpose here, but the graphite rod is needed for additional power.

ELECTRONICS

When it comes to fishing out deep, electronics are the only way to go. Identifying structure and locating fish on StructureScan will help you dissect areas of the lake much faster.

Having the right equipment and understanding your sonar can improve your fishing efficiency. The angle of your transducer, technical settings and other small details can make a big difference.

I have done my own research, watched how- to videos and enlisted the assistance of an expert to increase my own knowledge. A simple call to customer service for assistance, time invested in one of the electronics classes or a post on the Lowrance Forum of WesternBass.com will get an answer to a question no matter how big or how small.

After researching sonar videos and how-tos, I came across a gentleman who helped me more than I ever expected as a customer. That’s where an expert comes in. Randy Kuhens from Precision Sonar helped me set up my boat with two different sonar mounts

and explained some basics that I

would need on the water to help

reduce my learning curve.

My journey has taught

me that going from low-end

electronics to modern technology

requires just as much research

as the sport of bass fishing as a

whole.
