DISCOVERY OF A SUMMER SWIMBAIT BITE

Brown is a meticulous record taker and logs the hours he spends on the water in pursuit of giants.

During one summer, he logged 280 hours throwing traditional soft plastic trout imitators. This was done in four and six-hour blocks and the results were horrible. “I would fish for months without getting a bite and when I did, it was a six pounder,” began Brown. “I was force-feeding them and it wasn’t working.”

He added that all changed when he discovered the Slide Swimmer 250.

Before the bait was as well-known as it is today, Brown would purchase each and everyone he could find.

“I had notifications on my phone for when one was added to eBay and I would buy them all, regardless of the cost,” he said.

That was the year he recorded his second best of all-time, with 107 bass over 10 pounds landed, with 80 being caught on the Slide Swimmer 250.

MOON PHASE

Moon phase is something that many bass anglers pay attention to around the spawn or when planning a night fishing trip. Brown looks at it differently and feels that it is one of the most important factors for a swimbait bite, even during midday.

“Every time I catch a big one, I look up at the sky. If you can see the moon in the sky, your chances of a double-digit bass are slim,” he said. “I wait until the moon is completely gone before heading out or if it appears, I go home and will come back when it is gone.”

To Brown, it doesn’t matter if it is a quarter, half or full moon. If it is visible, he waits.

This goes against common thinking and has stumped biologists who have fished with him.

“I was told that everything I do is in exact contrast to everything that is written about bass fishing and moon phase,” he said.
