SLICK, SUNNY AND CALM IS PRIME TIME

Cloudy and windy

conditions are usually

the conditions swimbait

anglers crave, but Brown

has had the best success

on the nicest days.

“If you watch some

of my videos, the big

ones are always caught

on those bright, gorgeous

days,” he recalled. “The

warmer weather is when the fish are active and willing to chase a glide bait.”

RETRIEVES

Getting the best gliding action out of your bait is essential and Brown and others utilize their reel handles instead of their rods to work the bait.

“The first thing I will do is throw it out and 7 l 0 et it

sink,” he said. “Once it hits bottom. I give it a quick snap of the reel to get it going side to side and you will feel it when it starts to work,”

He noted that it takes discipline to wait for the bait to fall.

“I use a moderate retrieve and use quick quarter turns of the handle and then push the rod forward to let slack in the line and allow the bait to glide,” he continued. “If your line is too tight, you could end up fouling the hooks with your line.”

Over the years of fishing the bait, Brown has developed a sense for when he thinks a fish is following the bait even if he cannot see it.

“Sometimes you just have a gut-feeling there is one watching it,” he said. “That is when I give it a quicker pop of the reel handle and let it glide longer.”

He retrieves the bait as it glides 18- to 36-inches to either side.

“You can also cast it right along a dock and get it to glide under the dock to see if anyone is home,” he added.
