Delta - Stripers move in
2004-09-27 Jackson Chapman Sacramento CSBA
Stripers are moving into the system in ever increasing numbers. There are reports from both the Sacramento and San Joaquin sides of the delta of fish being caught. Most are being caught trolling either rebels or bombers in 10 to 15 feet of water. The Sacramento River between Collinsville and 3-Mile Slough and The San Joaquin River from the Antioch Bridge past Eddo’s to False River early in the morning seems to produce the best. This is as much due to the lack of boating traffic as it is to feeding periods. Once the boat parades start it is time to find another place or think about calling it a day.
One of our chapter’s best, Mark Wilson, reports from Sunday “went striper trolling with me today. We trolled Rattle Traps and Rebels in shallow water or deeper water, depending upon which lure we were using. The bite was early before and during the low tide change. Then around 2:30 p.m. we had another little spurt. Final result was 5 shaker stripers, 21 keeper stripers, and 1 stinky salmon. The biggest stripers went 18#, 12#, 10#, 10#, 10#, and 8#. The salmon weighed 10 pounds. Pictures at Brannan Island and back at Vieira's to clean fish before the salmon trollers got there” and from Saturday, “trolling with me today down in the delta. Much too windy on the Sacramento side, so we headed over to the other river. We found some fish at the morning's low tide around 8 a.m. Landed 4 keepers and 3 shakers. Not much else until we found some fish around Eddos at the afternoon high tide around 2:30 p.m. 18 more keepers and 2 more shakers. The largest fish went 12#, 12#, 10#, 10#, 8#, and 8#. Most fish were in the 6# to 8# range. We wound up catching the stripers on a clown colored Rebel in 12' to 15' of water. There was a lot of floating grass today from the wind breaking up the grass beds. “
