Delta - Miss the Trash get the Fish

2004-10-27 www.captaindon.com

I fished 3 days this past week with cancellations on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the storms. All 3 days were very productive with 18 Stripers being kept. These are the results of these trips.

October 18 Barry and dad Neil Sterud, Tony Cutino, Bernie Head, and Chuck Keller fished with me. They caught 16 Stripers and kept 5. Tony caught the largest Striper at 7.5 pounds while trolling a Fire Tiger broken-back Rebel.

October 23 Don Laytham, Clint Weldon, Lynn Pursell, Phillip Morgan, Scott Bell, and Bill Pursell fished with me. They caught 18 Stripers and kept 7 in spite of the wind and rain. Lynn caught the largest Striper at 10 pounds while trolling a chartreuse and orange broken-back Rebel.

October 24 Fred Perry brought his wife Tami and 6 year old son Jacob fishing with me. They caught 3 limits of Stripers. Tami caught the largest Striper at 10 pounds while trolling a chartreuse and orange broken-back Rebel. Young Jacob was a trooper. He reeled up his keepers with just a little help from mom. The morning was cool and overcast but the afternoon was warm and beautiful with a little wind.

The hottest lure continues to be my chartreuse and orange broken-back Rebel. This week it caught 90% of all the fish. At one point I had half the poles with that lure on them. I usually don’t like to have the same lure on too many poles because if the lure goes dead, the fishing can suffer.

My fish count is improving everyday with the water temperature at 63 in most places. The biggest problem is all the trash, grass and hyacinth in the water from the recent weather. On Saturday I made many runs to try and find clean water only to find an area unfishable. I believe that the San Joaquin area is loaded with Stripers but you just can’t fish a lot of areas. Just keep trying until you find a clean area and you should be rewarded.

Thank you Capt Don
