Anglers urged to keep lake trout at Flaming Gorge Reservoir

Currently, the popular reservoir in northeastern Utah—known for producing some of the largest lake trout in the country—has too many small lake trout in it. The abundant small lake trout are competing with kokanee salmon and rainbow trout for food. Because there isn't enough food to go around, the rate at which the lake trout are growing is in decline. And, the number of kokanee salmon and rainbow trout in the reservoir is declining too.

    Trout Stocking Program

Catchable rainbow and brown trout were released today at Malabar Farm in Lucas as part of a pilot project to evaluate both species' suitability for future stockings in the area, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The Inn Pond across from Malabar Farm Restaurant received 300 rainbow trout, and Switzer Creek on Malabar Farm State Park property received 400 brown trout. Both locations are spring fed, and biologists believe the water may be sufficiently cool to support year-round trout fishing opportunities. Stockings will continue in these locations if the trout find the area suitable for continued success.

Opening Day of California Trout Season

Opening day of the California trout fishing season is known by some as Fishmas — the most exciting day of the year for trout anglers. This is the day lakes and rivers, closed to fishing for the past several months, come alive with eager trout and ambitious anglers. Make sure you have your fishing license in hand before hitting the water.2017-2018 Freshwater Sport Fishing RegulationsThe general trout opener will commence on Saturday, April 29, one hour before sunrise. Given California's significant snowpack and associated run off, many rivers will be experiencing swift and cold water conditions which can be dangerous. CDFW reminds anglers to be cautious when fishing streams or rivers for the opener. Given the potential high water conditions, focusing on lakes and reservoirs may be the best bet for anglers. Most lakes, rivers and streams have a limit of five trout per day and 10 in possession. However, regulations differ on season dates, bag limits, minimum and maximum size limits, and gear restrictions.
