The dam functions as a water storage facility and produces hydroelectric energy for Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. The reservoir is a major unit of the Colorado River Storage Project.

The high elevation of the reservoir keeps temperatures moderate, 80 degrees Fahrenheit/23.8 degrees Celsius, during the summer months. However the lake does freeze in the winter months.
