Berends/Mateo Top 4th Stop on 100% BASS Pro Circuit

Let’s see, where to start, I guess we will start with the weather since it’s been goofy all year and this weekend was no exception. The weather was 100 degrees on Monday and by Friday it had cooled off and we had 30 mile an hour winds. We had no idea what to expect and we were given a tipical fall day on the Delta come Saturday morning for blastoff at Brannon Island State Park. Cold, windy, and a threat of rain (that never showed up). When all was said and done, these Pro’s sure figured it out and brought us some great fish at weigh in.

Finishing on top for the second time in a row and the forth time in two years was Folsoms own Albert Berends. Teamed up for the day with Amatuer Patrick Mateo of Mountain View, these guys walked away with the victory by nearly 7 pounds and simply put, dominated the competition. Their 5 fish limit tipped the scales at 25.21 pounds and was anchored by two nice fish, a 6.29 Lb. (Patrick) and a 7.96 Lb. (Albert) bass. When asked about there sucessful day, Albert told us he start on the west delta and followed the tide, all the way east until he ran out of moving water and ran back west to finish the day. “We picked up our Flippin Sticks to start the day and never put them down”, Albert told everyone at the awards. The lure of choice was Persuader Jigs in a black color and Sweet Beaver plastics from Reaction Inovation. Albert took the time to thanks 100% BASS and our sponsors and then his, Ranger Boats, Mercury Outboards, MinnKota, Shimano, G-Loomis, and Persuader Baits. Congatulations on another great day for Albert and Patrick and we hope they enjoy depositing their checks, $2140 for Albert and $1035 for Patrick. Also, find a nice place for your champions award, the etched magnum bottle of EOS wine.

Second place went to Livermore’s Pro Simon Salugsugan and Hayward’s Calvin Warren. These guys brought in 5 fish weighing 18.30 pounds and their limit included the big fish of the day, a beautiful Delta Toad weighing 9.34 Lbs. Calvin told us it was the biggest fish he has ever caught in a tournament and thanked Simon for an incredible day. They also Flipped all day long using Jigs and concentration mostly in the central delta. For their efforts, they received $980 and $995 respectively and a pair of plaques to remember the day.

16.85 Lbs was the third place weight and it went to Reno’s Rob Wenning and Am partner Kyle Ray of Colfax. Rob’s pattern was a little differnent than the others as he Flipped Yamamoto Tube Baits, Senkos, and Zoom Brush Hogs on the outside of grass lines in 4 to 8 feet of water. Wenning said they went east and stayed there all day, until it was time to run back to Brannon Island. At the awards he thanked his sponsors Nitro boats, Mercury Outboards, Phoenix Rods, Pro Line Lures, Fishermans Eyewear and most importantly, his wife Donna. The reward this day was $1110 for Rob and $460 for kyle.

Forth place went to Ralph Saul of Concord and Duke Kanaya with 16.25 Lbs. They received plaques and checks in the amount of $580 and $335 while rounding out the top five were Angler of the Year Rick Kendrick and AM Tony Pratt. These guys took home $450 and $150.
