Jigs are a big fish baits if you put them in the right hands of a skilled jig fisherman and you know how to fish them. It's a proven fact you don't need 65 lb braid to catch 10 lbs. bass in or around or over in any type structure that a proven fact.
It's a proven fact You don't need a $200,000.00 truck and bassboat to catch bass over 10lbs
Plus $60,000.00 graphs and trolling motor
And $100,000 in fishing gear to catch bass over 10 lbs. Proof in the pictures

Next thing you know, bass boats will come equipped with beepers that sound like the trout truck backing up to dump trout.

Also these so called sports writers for westernbass should have had this story up sunday it was caught sat.
They post every other out of state fish in the sharedlunker program that don't mean chit to the state of Ca. or if you didn't catch it from a kayak or boat. It's never mentioned.

Fish of a lifetime. It’s really too bad that CA DFW doesn’t have any kind of programs like they do in Texas and other, especially southern states that use these trophy fish for programs to breed for the future benefit of their state’s fisheries.

Those are feel good programs....do you think this fish was a virgin? The truth is, artificial genetic manipulation doesn't matter when the tool to manage fisheries (harvest) is ignored overwhelmingly by the user group. The genetics to grow trophy fish are here, they just need to be given favorable conditions for them to be expressed. Growth rates of bass in SoCal are about half of what is used to be when angler induced mortality was much higher. C&R culture has destroyed trophy bass fishing.

So we should be harvesting what - maybe half our limits? Especially the small keepers?

Exactly! And that is part of the reason we post those trophy fish program photos. We wish for those programs here in California. Nothing changes if nothing changes and knowledge of what others do and what can be done is only a start but if no one knows what they dont know. Maybe some day, if enough people or the right person see(s) what's happening elsewhere and wants to change something in Calif. - maybe it will happen. Maybe. Don't have the answer, but it cant hurt and its always fun to see big fish catches!!

Also while we at WB are also partial to California catches, we also know we are not the only ones that bass fish, not the only ones with big fish catches, and are happy to celebrate others big trophy catch accomplishments.

And regarding another comment...

yes, our writers did contact the fisherman about the 17 pounder a couple days ago for an interview and photos to use (with his permission). If he grants it, we will move forward. As always @jiggin thanks for the kind words.

It's to bad that DFG can't start planting more trout closer plants together on a lot of lakes in Southern ca. & Central Ca. Then you would start see these more of these big bass return. They slowed plants down it took a big food source away.

So when deer populations get unhealthy and overpopulated do they plant more grass or kill more deer? We aren't planting more grass...kill more deer.

If killing bambi is upsetting, perhaps hunting isn't the pastime to be undertaken.

This isn't a hunting forum you might want to discuss your bambi problem over in the hunting forum.
I'm sure you'll get over it.

Yup. Shared some great stories with Tom of fishing the Eastern Sierra in the dim historic past.

So guys catching 12lb plus fish should keep them? I doubt harvesting a handful of 12lb+ bass is going to produce record size fish. Bass that get way up there in weight are lazy pigs that just swim up to the taco truck once a week and gorge. After a day or two the trout disperse and are not so easily preyed upon. Evidently more grass needs to be planted if we want a world record bass. Imagine, if they just planted one lake 2-3 times a week with trout that had bass with good Florida genes we would have a world record bass within 5 years and it would probably be broken the following year.

Eastman is known for being a big bass lake it hold 150,000 acre ft of water when full it currently is at 19% and they a currently are dumping trout.
There are a very fair amount of 4 to 10 lb bass in that lake.
In the 11 to 15 lb class there again there are a fair amount of those big bass in there also.these bass don't just jump on the first thing that swim by they have gotten smart. Wintertime bassin on that lake can produce some big bass fun on all type of baits and structure. Florida strain bass were interduced into the lake in 1980 with the help of the Madera bass club/ DFG that lake has a very good population of good bass it rebound very year from both high and low water years
A few years ago with high water levels I went with DFG on there shocking boats what we shock and what we recorded was amazing. On a couple of those trips it did take me awhile to get over it.
