Dedicated 7" senko rod - Dobyns DX 744C SH or Shimano Expride EXC72HB or ???

Post by Ranger519v »

I have several Dobyns rods (both champion and extreme) and a couple of Expride rods. The two closest sets I have in these lines are 1) the Dobyns DX 805 FLIP/PUNCH and the Extreme EXC711XHB of which I prefer the Dobyns (for punching) and 2) Dobyns Champion 735 and 736 and the Extreme EXC73XHB of which I prefer the Extreme (for froggin').

I'm looking for a dedicated 7" Senko rod that has the best combination of being light and being sensitive. I've been using a Dobyns DC 733C SH but it is a little soft in the tip for the 7". I'm wavering between the Dobyns DX 744 and the Expride EXC72HB.

I welcome any and all suggestions.

It's all personal preference. For me, the 744 is better suited for 5" & 6" senkos. I like a little more horsepower and would opt for the 745 (or even your heavier flip/punch rods) for a the 7". You're using a larger and thicker gauge hook and the extra tip power will help drive the hook point in. I don't have any experience with Expride but the specs on it look more comparable to the 5 power Dobyns than the 4

Comes down to how the 7” Senko is rigged; Wacky weightless, Wackly Neko or weedless Texas.
Owner Wacky weedless Jungle hook rig wacky or Neko ant decent worm rod works good. Weedless T-rig 5 power/MH+ JWR rods work.

My favorite 7 inch senko Rod is the Dobyns champion 764c, hands down. With that being said, I mostly use it on the California Delta fishing around heavy cover. I use it with 20 lb floro and my drag is pretty much buttoned. 764c has a lot of uses, big senko being my favorite. To me the 744c is more of a bladed jig rod for me. Just another opinion.

I like the DX795 for big senkos and Texas rigs. I like the extra length for picking up line quick and horsepower for getting the big girls out of heavy cover.
