Gas/motor issue

Post by nate50 »

Hey guys,

I had a motor issue the other day on the water. When I first launched the boat I idled out of the marina and went to take off and the motor died. I pumped the ball and it fired up and ran like normal. I fished the a few hours then started back to the ramp. I idled out of the slough and went to take off and died again. Some issues the ball had to be pumped then ran like normal. When I got home I checked the ball/hoses thinking maybe it would show signs of wear or have cracks causing it to lose suction/pressure. The ball/hoses like good no visible signs of wear. I did notice 2 of the hose clamps were loose. One of them was so loose that I could move the hose the other was loose but not nearly as bad. I tightened those clamps and checked all the clamps coming from the gas tank to the motor. I’m hoping that the loose hose is the issue. Is there anything I should check?

Thanks Nate

I had a similar problem. It ended up being the low range fuel pump. Mercury outboard

Was that a hard and/or expensive fix?

My son has a 92 Champion with a 200hp Merc. He had the exact same issue and it turned out to be a loose fuel pump.

Yes, but what isn't on a boat !! I think it was around $400 If I remember right. The pump itself is not cheap !!

Disconnect your gas lines on each side of the bulb and make sure they dont look like this!!! The ethanol is today's gas strips the lining of the older gas lines and it clogs at the bulb. My boat was doing the same issue and it was in the shop for a week and they could never figure it out. Spoke with the Merc specialist on the BassBoatCentral website and he pointed me in the right direction.
