Long Fishing Rods

Back in the 80's and 90's most of us used rods from 6-7 feet long, with a 7.5' broomstick for flipping. I notice now people describing gear combos with 7.5-8 foot rods. I assume swimbaits require more leverage to throw the heavy baits. My old rods work fine for me, particularly when combined with braided line. Are the longer rods just fashion or have techniques really changed radically in the last ten years?

This topic comes up frequently on several forums. In short the longer rods help make longer casts, and more leverage on the hookset. I really think these properties help when fishing deep and or clear water. Even when your fishing shallow the longer rods help to get better hook penetration especially when you get caught out of position and get a less than perfect hookset. Longer rods aren't less accurate its just a matter of practice. In the end its still a matter of preference and if your rods are working to your liking then thats all that matters. I've moved mostly to 7.5-8ft rods and really enjoy them. Powell makes some excellent rods in this category. Longer rods are here to stay. Many advantages to the longer rods. As materials have gotten better it's let comanies build longer without feeling really heavy in the tip..

I build all my rods to a balance point with the best materials available. Many companies claim balance and are NOT even close. Go to your nearest dealer and compare the different companies rods.

Remember the pistol grip rods? Back then a 6' stick was pretty long.

Pretty much every stick on the boat is 7'3" or better. The only exception is a 7' spinning stick for skipping docks. Longer casts & better line pickup as already has been posted. I think that once you go to the longer sticks, they really feel much more comfortable. Cranking with a Dobyns 764CB. Jigs with a Dobyns DX745. Punching with a Dobyns DX795Flip.
