Nutria, a large semi-aquatic rodent discovered in California... if you see one...

Post by WB Staff »

From CDFW
Nutria, a large semi-aquatic rodent, were discovered in California in March 2017. Nutria can have a body length of up to 2.5 feet and weigh more than 20 pounds. These highly invasive mammals reproduce rapidly and destroy wetlands, agriculture and levees. Since the initial discovery, more than 70 nutria have been taken from six counties, including Merced, Fresno, Stanislaus, Tuolumne, San Joaquin and Mariposa Counties. Help California track current populations and prevent further spread of nutria by learning how to identify nutria and reporting nutria sightings to Invasives@wildlife.ca.gov. You can also call the Invasive Species Hotline at (866) 440-9530. If possible, please submit a photo or video of the sighting! (Photo credit: Peggy Sells)
