marine cranking battery

Post by jon »

My 1999 Mercury Optimax manual says my engine is rated for 1000 marine cranking amps and 750 cold cranking amps. Does anyone know if I can use a battery that puts out more marine cranking amps than what my engine is rated for? I'm considering an Optima battery that puts out 1100 marine cranking amps. Also, does anyone know if I effectively use a battery with significantly fewer than 1000 marine cranking amps? I temporarily put in a battery with 550 marine cranking amps, and it seems to crank just fine.

1000 is the "minimum" for the Opti. I run 1280mca on mine. You could run 10,000mca if you wanted. Motor is only gonna use what it needs (1000mca).
