What brand truck do you like ?

Post by L.Hackney »

I need to buy a new one and am deciding between diesel & regular, also make & model.
I have been a Chevy man like my dad before me and own a Ford F-250 now. However, would like some advise from fellow angler's that actually tow alot like myself..
Thanks, :D

Lowell before you buy give Tim Anglin at Thompson's Toyota a call and go up and drive the new Tundra. They have 0% 60 month financing and the new truck is awesome. I am getting 17 on the hwy and 15 towing my boat with it.

If you are interested in GMC Thompson's also owns a GMC dealership in P-ville and can hook you up there as well.

drop me an email if I can help you.

I personally own a chevy 2500 duramax shortbed. i chipped it with exhaust. Let me tell you....that thing can tow. It will not break rpm goin up hils at 75. Sure with the modifications i have just under 500hp, but with diesel the more power the better fuel economy. i get 18 mpg towing the champion and 20-22 with out the boat. Modifications are fairly reasonable when you consider how much cash you save on diesel after you have them installed. just my 2cents. You also cannot beat the allison tranny. That darn thing does the work for you.Very heavy duty. You can easily go down steep hills with out ever down shifting and not gain speed. The new models have a 6 speed auto tranny as well. very trick!

Happy with my 2006 F-250 diesel. I think that year is a 6 liter, and already there is a newer motor.

The only reason I bought a diesel, I also tow a Bobcat around with it. Tons of torque with no mods whatsoever.

With the price of diesel, you might consider a gas model to pull the boat. (It may be worth doing some math, and considering what your needs are regarding a truck.)

I think the diesel fad is over.

I just traded my Tundra in for the new Chevy and it was definitely a good move. I have not been in one of the new, larger, tundras, but I hear they have allot of power. Probably any of the new trucks have the guts to pull a bass boat just fine... but with the Chevy you just get more of the comforts that make the trip more enjoyable. If its in your budget, do yourself a favor and at least look at the new Silverado LTZ package. Its @ 45K but they will deal on the 07's, plus they have the 0% for 60 months and a 10/100,000 warranty.

In March of '06 I purchased a brand new Silverado 1500 extra cab 4X4 with all the bells and whistles. With all the rebates and incentives that were out there at that time and buying with my Costco membership I got that truck for 32K out the door. It listed for over 40! If you are a member of Costco it really pays to use that membership at auto dealerships that will honor it. Most Chevy and Dodge dealers are part of it. Check it out. Oh BTW, I love my truck. It pulls my Triton just great. Mileage is fine when not towing (18-20) but towing it goes down to about 13. Good luck, I was in the same situation (blown motor) so I hope it works out for you.

I do like those Tundras but they are sure proud of them.

I have tried them all, well almost at least. I always buy new and drive the hell out of them until they want to fall apart. I tow a 21ft Ranger for the record. My Chevy started having issue's at 79k, dumped it before things got worse. Went with Ford next and blown trani at 85k and rear dif started popping/slipping at 101k. Dumped it. I now have an '07 Tundra. This truck is a big step ahead of the others I have owned. It pulls the boat a lot better with the 381 horses. The biggest difference I noticed was the ability to stop it while towing and the handling over major mountain roads. I am very impressed with what Toyota has done with the new Tundra and this comes from a guy who wouldnt even concider the older Tundra. Listen to Kent and pay a visit to them. Dont let sticker shock worry you either. My truck has everything I need and I only payed 29k for it.

Hey Lowell, i'm probally of the minority here but i have a 2003 GMC 1500 X-Cab with the gas 5.3L engine in it. I love it, looks good, rides great, and has plenty of power. I tow my boat all over the place and have absolutely no problems at all. I bought mine brand new for 24,000 out the door and got the 0% financing through GMAC. Only 8 payments left and its mine !! hehe

That cattle truck is freaking hilarious :-) LOL

But what kind of truck do I like ?

ALL OF THEM !!!

Seriously though. You often here Ford owners talking garbage about Chevy's, and Chevy guys talking down about Dodges, etc....

But I'll tell you right now, I'd take a new Chevy, Ford, Dodge, Toyota, Nissan, etc ! They are all sweeter than $#!+ !

Almost makes me wish I had a real job, and real money...... but then again....... :-)

I just got one last week. 07' Crew Cab Hemi. The major selling point for me was the LIFE time bumper to bumper warrenty, that right Life!!! The powertrain comes with the truck, but for an extra $1,500 you can get the rest of the truck. And price was also a factor. You can get the 07's for under $24k. If price was not an issue, I probably would have gotten a GMC Sierra Diesel, but your looking at $40k+.

Life time bumper-to-bumper? That's a great selling point! My brother bought a new 06 Dodge with the Hemi and, while it tows OK, he is (and has said so), extremely jealous of my 07 Silverado LTZ. Both are good trucks, no doubt, the chevy is just more user friendly. Having said that... I would give up alot of comforts for a LIFETIME warranty.

Yeah, I've been a chevy (GMC) guy all my life, but with the Bumper to Bumper and the price difference, I went with the Dodge. It pulls my boat (20' Ranger) like it aint even there. Although I have not pulled any hills yet, but it feels like it will have plenty of power. The newer trucks also have 4 wheel oversized disk breaks now, so the break problems the Dodge's used to have are a thing of the past.

Take a few hours this weekend and go drive each model that you like. Don't even bother talking pricing with the dealers, just tell them you are doing comparisons and have not made your mind up yet. All the full size trucks will all have some pluses and minuses that you will have to weigh. After you get done, go home and review all the things you liked and disliked about each truck and you will most likely come to a decision on one. Then begin the haggling over price!

I only have an 18' boat, so I didn't need a diesel that could tow my garage as well! Also my truck is a daily driver that has to haul the kids and crap as well. Plus, it is what we take when we go on road trips, so it has to be comfortable for the Wife and kids.

I will not own another Ford after dealing with an Explorer that started to fall apart at 70k miles and my Wife's Taurus that had a tranny go out at 40k miles! Ford can say whatever they want about quality, they will not get my money again!

I think that Chevy makes a decent truck, and a lot of guys seem to like them. I don't care for a lot of the interior features, although I have not been in a '07 model. Probably a good truck and you can certainly get a fair deal right now.

The new Toyota Tundra is a very capable truck, lots of horsepower, awesome brakes...a real step up from the earlier Tundra's. However, it is just an ugly truck! I am sorry but the front end is just hideous...they are trying to make it look tough and it just isn't working for me. The other negative about the Toyota is price...a comparable Tundra was almost twice as much as my Dodge!!! Another thing that you don't hear about with Toyota is the cost of ownership after the warranty has expired. Their parts and service can be very expensive!

The Nissan Titan is not a full size truck, it is the equivalent to the older Tundra. End of story!

I have always been a Mopar guy, so I was a little impartial to Dodge. But after doing the research, it just confirmed what I allready thought. The Dodge Ram is the best value in a full size truck, especially with the warranty that is being offered!

I bought my Dodge in April, a few months before the lifetime warranty was available so I paid a little less than you would today ($21k with lots of options). I can still purchase the warranty if I want to, and I might down the road. The Hemi engine is awesome, tows my boat without even blinking, gets decent mileage (13-14 mpg while towing) and it is a blast to drive! The Wife even likes driving it! It is very comfortable and spacious inside, all the knobs and insturements are right where they should be, and it rides great! There are tons of aftermarket add on's for the Hemi to get better mileage or more horsepower.

And the Dodge Ram is easily the best looking full size truck out there!!!

For me it was a no brainer, but you should drive them all first and get what you like. Good luck and let us know what you end up with!

I am on my third Dodge now, and I will never own another tow vehicle than a dodge. My first two where not hemi's but they had POWER and sucked more Petro, but my 05 Ram 4X4 is just an awesome truck. Gets good mileage, is a real looker and I did not even get all the bells and whistles on this package. But a great warranty package as well.

This will sell you, my wife drives it during the week to work and back, she loves the comfort of the big ride and feels safe and secure.

Hey Mike, that lifetime bumper to bumper is unbelievable ! .....especially for somebody like myself that can absolutely wear out a vehicle in 5 or 8 years !

I can just see it now..... "I don't know why the tranny went out.... It's only got 317K miles on it" ? Upp... Time for a new one :-)

I'm just a bit skeptical as to how much Dodge would put out for continued repairs, long into the future ? I guarantee that in 20 years (if I live 20 years) it would be cheaper for them to just "give" me a new truck, rather than replacing every single part on the original truck, so that it would still work....

Hmmmm..... Now if I just had $30K to throw around :-)

After the 75K warranty expired it went out again Guess what They replaced it for FREE!!!! and when I went to sell the truck I took it in for print out etc. They told me to notifiy the new owner if he had any issues with the water pump.

Interestingly enough I've been running a Ford F150 since I purchased it at Northlake Ford on Clear Lake in 2002, now Holder Ford. I couldn't be happier with the truck. It's got nearly 150,000 miles on it and I've had little to no problems over the last few years. I don't feel whats behind when I'm towing so folks can blast Ford all they want, the truck has served me well and continues to do so. I also notice a lot of Ford trucks in the parking lot when I'm launching so they must be working well for many more then just me.

John got me in a 01 150 back in the north lake ford days... I sure was happy and never felt the boat behind me, never any problems with it.

Im truck shopping now, its all about the best deal as a truck is a truck. They all have power to pull and a warranty to cover what brakes...

That's funny, 'cause the only problem I've had with mine was also the water pump. Cost me $500 to get towed home from I5. That sucked.

I had a Dakota once and the down side to them was that not in the towing but the as Hollywood said, the stopping. Excessive wear on the front calipers was causing me to replace them at a rate of two to three pairs per year.

2007 Ford F150 with the 5.4 towing a cougar no problems going over the hills to Clear Lake.

Just made a round trip to Tacoma, WA averageing between 18-19 traveling between 70-80 MPH, not towing.

Great ride, quiet with losts of room and smooth ride. Give it a test drive.
