What would cause a battery o explode

Started the big motor up last night and heard a loud pop. The top (where you add water) blew off one side and the side of the battery cracked. Any ideas why.

All lead acid batteries discharge Hydrogen sulfide gas which is explosive. The crappier the battery condition, the more discharge. All it takes is a poor connection internaly between cells or at the base of the posts. When the big motor draws the heavy current through the bad connection you get a spark and BOOM !!! Make sure that you rinse the heck out the entire bilge area with a baking soda solution to neutralize all the acid.

Overcharging will make them explode also.....
