I use not only the split ring, but also a small snap. This helps me reverse the bait when I feel like it. The trick is not to get too big of a snap - this will drag the line around and snag the front hook - not good. Try it.

Good question, my .02 is it depends on the line and or lure size. normally on a medium to small size spook I usually use 15lb mono for open water situations but when I get into an area that demands heavier line I will add a split ring, that same lure with 20lb line will not walk the same as the 15lb tied directly to the bait. The mono is preference some poeple like braid on topwater applications. A larger spook will walk fine with a heavier line tied directly to the bait because of the weight factor. So basically the only time I really use a split ring on my spook type baits is when Im looking for un hampered action with a smaller bait and heavier line. The rest of the time I tie directly to the bait. just my .02.tight lines, Scott h.
