Whats your favorite Chatterbait trailer?

Post by Kevin Evans - Kap »

The how do you fish your Chatterbait post had me thinking
Whats your favorite Chatterbait trailer?
Do you think the trailer makes a big difference?
Does the trailer color matter? Or do you try to match the hatch so to speak?

Kap, great question, I sure hope you get some definitive answers..Even though I have had only extremely limited success using any chatter tyoe bait..I have been matching the trailer color with the bait color..I can't honestly say this is the best, only two fish for all the times I have used them, one striper and one LMB..I do prefer to use Yamamoto single tail grubs, but have tried others, including Swim Senkos..

What Sacto John said! Swim it like you would a small swimbait – but this one make a noise to draw the bass attention to its movement.

Kap,
Soft plastic swimbaits are excellent trailers, but there is one in particular...and I've been sworn to secrecy! but if you can figure it out, you'll never use another type of trailer on your chatterbaits
It puts out a ton of action when rigged correctly.

If Brett Hite comes looking for blood, I'll point to, "You Dan" not "Me Dan"

It really is a killer trailer, and most people pass them by when cruising thru "The Wal-Mart"

he's given it up in interviews in print and over the air already. I also like using a robo worm for a trailer. I like contrasting colors vs. matching the skirt.

The same color combos I use for a jig I use for the chatterbait. As for the trailers I love the robos pitchin craws.

Kap,

The trailer really depends on how your gonna throw it. if you just crank and wind, then the smaller swimbait type trailers without a skirt work since your swimming a bait back. But I have had the most success with a yo-yo or rip-it motion, where you get some drop and fall action going and let the bait flutter.

If you try that, think and go BIG! The more movement and action you can get from a trailer, the better. Try a 10" Berkley power worm! that ribbon tail is awesome as it swims and glides; especially falling thru the grass clumps. Use the trailer as a color accent; like tequilla sunrise.

I only use those white chatterbaits if i am going to crank & wind, and then i just pull the skirt and add a swimbait trailer.

Give it a try and see if you up your action too!

good luck,

Unreal action with the tail on the large Panic Minnows...Caught numerous LMB, along with 2 tiger muskies. I removed the skirt that came with the baits, and went to town.

Swimming Senko, Yamamoto grubs, Lake Fork Live Majic Shad. I like the larger Yamamoto grubs and the Live Majic Shad is awesome, even without the Chatterbait

Is the 3.5" or 4.5" magic shad more preferable on the chatterbait?

And is it better to remove the skirt from the chatterbait for this technique?

I pour a 1/8 th oz dart head with barb on a 2/0 trailer hook in my modified do it mold. Attach the trailer hook as you would normally. Using a matching skirt and grub or plastic bait of choice makes the bait bulkier and pulsates like crazy. Them big delta ladies can't resist. Works for me.

Both will work great. I like the 4.5 inch better. I leave the skirt on , but you could take it off. This is a great combo.
