Boat set-up, props, etc.

Post by Zebrathirteen »

Gentlemen,

Got some boat set-up and prop questions for you.

I have an 06 Champion 187DC with a 175 Opti (35hrs) on it. With a 23" Trophy set 3.250" (centerline) below the pad, and just me in the boat, I got a GPS'd 58 mph at 5750 rpm's...with buzzers, bells, alarms, etc. Didn't like that. So I put on a 23" Tempest Plus, and with the same set up, got 63 mph at 5350-5400 rpm. Much better...good holeshot, too.

Fast forward about a week, but I got The Dad in the boat. I barely got 60 mph, and it was straining to get to 5200rpm's. Felt kinda sluggish. Next week after, I take the jack plate up .250" and I've got The Wife with me...same thing. Kinda tapped out in the 5200-5300 rpm range. Niether Wife or Dad is heavy, either. Elevation was about 800 ft. My concern re: the above is that The Wife will ALWAYS be in the boat with me as she is a bass fishing freak, and the boat just didn't feel right.

I think I'm not quite there yet, and the boat has a bit of performance left in it. I think WOT should be in the 5500 rpm range. So I ask you, what do you guys think, and where should I go from here? I've seen post from guys running 25's on 187's and a 175, and getting 65 mph, but that doesn't make sense to me looking at what I was getting with a 24, speed and rpm wise. But...I don't know much about setting up a boat, either.

Raise the jack plate? Different prop? It's fine, leave it alone? Worry about something else and just go fishing? Thoughts and opinions appreciated.

Thanks,
Justin

I have a ranger 185 with 175 opti and I run a 25p all plugs in. I get 67.6 at 5550 rpm with quarter tank and no load. Maybe if you know someone that has tempest plus 25p try it. You might get a little more. And keep messing with jackplate height. Also check out BBC boards.

To answer your question I ran a 186 with a 25 pitch tempest. I had a Merc 175 EFI My boat with two people would GPS at 70.8mph. A buddy of mine had the same 187 but with a Opti 175. He to ran a 25 tempest. Both were set on 6" jack plates. His would GPS @ 67mph with two people. My boat would hit 5900rpm WOT. His would hit 5600 WOT. Note that we both weighed about 230lbs each. The EFI were always a little faster than the opti's so I think if you can go to a boat shop, they should have a 25 pitch you could borrow. put that prop on and dont change your settings. See where you GPS and RPM at WOT then compare it for yourself. Then again, my neighbor has a 187 with a 175 HPDI Yammi. It is an absolute slug. His top speed when I ran it with two people w/ a 25 pitch tempest would only GPS 60.5 at 5400 rpm WOT. So moral is, dont buy the Yammi just change your prop . LOL

Good Luck!

As was said before go to bassboatcentral.com and post. Wait for a reply from Pat Goff (or inc his name in the post) He is in the Champion forum or Set up forum, then listen. Include all info possible ie, jack plate set back, current motor height pad to center line of prop shaft,(make sure to level your trailer and motor to get a exact starting point), water presure at WOT, RPM's at WOT, prop model and pitch, ECT. He knows exactly how these boats should be set up.

Having your prop balanced and blueprinted can make a world of difference as well. If you are going to go on the BBC, ask Mark Croxton on the props boards what he can do for you. I have both my props worked by him with big improvements overall.

I run a 99 187 with a 175 EFI and tempest plus 25p
I get 60 mph at 5600 rpm which is max rpm for that motor. I carry a lot of stuff and two people. I've hit 62 mph at best on GPS.

Gentlemen,

I've posted my question over at BBC per your advice. But keep any thoughts coming...I'm all ears.

Rod,

When you say take the jackplate back, are you talking about moving it up?

Thanks,
Justin

if you have a 6 make it an 8 if you have a 8 make it a 10. On a Champion when you trim all the way out you should lose a little speed. If you can trim out all the way, throw a rooster and run it. I would add more jackplate. the farther back you go the higher you're able to run your motor the faster it goes and the better it handles.

You are running a 24p tempest. Not a 23p

Scooter,

I know...a typo. I couldn't figure out how to go back in and edit that. It became a 24 later in the post. It's not easy being a crouton...
