I need a 5 wire to 4 flat

Post by bassindon69 »

On my trailer I have a 5 wire going into the back of the plug then goes to a 4 flat plug. Where can I find this in Merced area? I guess it's not common.
I could not find one in los Banos.

Thanks guys.

Don.

What kind of a plug does your truck have?? On Ford's, it's a round 8 ... for that you can buy a round 8 to a flat 5 adaptor from Walmart or any marine dealer (West Marine, etc). Others, I'm not sure.

Also check your local auto parts dealers, such as Autozone, Kragen, etc... they usually carry a decent assortment of the adapters.

If it is a 5 flat you can use it on a 4 flat plug, just plug it in and leave the one side open? that is if it is a 5 flat?

Don you can't just leave the fifth open....for the most part the fifth plug is the electric to the trailer brakes and opens the selnoid (sp?) that allows you to back up the trailer. It took me a long while to find one that was converted over. I believe I got mine at a true auto parts store not just Autozone ect.....I'd call Manteca trailer. If you find one here I'd help get it down to you..

Correct this is how I run mine without issue. The fith is the electric brake connection. Just buy two and leave one in the truck as a spare!

If it is a 4 flat connection it would'nt have trailer brakes correct? I thought that is why you had to graduate to a 5 to get the trailer brake connection? This post might end up helping me more than you?

Don,

I have the same plug on my trailer and I was not able to make it work with a standard 4 wire 4 flat wiring harness. I was able to find a new plug online though I will look for it again and post the link.

It is called a "wishbone" harness. It has five wires going in and a four flat plug. Here is an image

I bought mine at Walmart for like $12....goes from my big Ford round connection to a flat 5....the fifth IS for your brakes and you could do without it BUT your brakes will apply when you try to back up anywhere thats not flat. Tighties

That's the one John. I use my Toyota and my GMC to pull my boat. They both adapt into a flat 4. The yellow wire broke off at the plug on the trailer that is like the one john posted. I am trying to just put back what was there

Here you go Don, its the same one I bought. It comes with 18 inches of wire but you can cut that back a bit.
