Konocti Closing
Just watched the news and Konocti will be closing in November.
I couldn't afford to stay there anyway.

Closing for the winter, remodeling, or for good? Konocti Harbor or KVC?

KONOCTI HARBOR RESORT TO CLOSE
KELSEYVILLE, Calif. (AP) -- The pending closure of a major Lake County resort will soon be putting hundreds of people out of work.
The operators of the Konocti Harbor Resort and Spa have notified Lake County officials that the resort will be shutting down for good on Nov. 10.
The resort's management company, White Star Advisors, said 700 people work at the resort on the shores of Clear Lake. Many of those workers are employed on a seasonal basis.
Word of the planned closure comes after the resort struggled financially for years.
In 2007 the property was put up for sale as part of a settlement with the Labor Department over allegations that union officials had mishandled funds intended for the benefit plans of union workers.

Maybe it will be scooped up at a bargain price and turned into another Indian Casino? I'd hate to see it sit vacant.

Yes, sad to hear. Crime goes up. People go hungry. On a side note, the last time the lake was this low, Konocti was the only place you could put in and they had a crane to lower boats in with straps attached to the crane and boats..

Not good news..A lot of other places there rely on the concerts to stay a float. Ferndale told me they would not make it if there were no concerts.

Can't imagine that place will be idle for long. A good management company could make that place work. Lake County will step up and make someone a sweet deal to take over the place (low taxes, expedited permits, etc.)
I mean, what else do they have besides the business generated by the lake? Well yes, there is the meth trade.

Re: Konocti Closing
Sad times, this will impact a lot more business's other then the Resort.
Re: Konocti Closing
Even though I've fished Clear Lake a ton, I've only launched at Konocti a couple of times.
Who ever takes over the resort should seriously take a look at the ramp and launch facility. For such a nice resort, the launch ramp is near useless.

Everything is fine for the WON BASS Tri-States slated for Sept 18-19th. I just got off the phone with Konocti Harbor and because they are the biggest employer in Lake County, they are under a mandate to give all employees a minimum of a 60 day lay-off notice. As such, thier target closure date is 11-11-09.
Again, the WON BASS Tri-States is not affected by this news.
Additionally, I was also told that this was not necessarily a done deal, so stay tuned for what may happen next year.

Wish we could start a REAL discussion on whats wrong with clearlake. the only thing you can do with that property is purchase it for a tear down and bulldoze it and start over.
Initially the resort was to be huge with what is currently in place just being the center attraction. the surrounding land was sold that was supposed to be a union retirement community to support everything.
The money was created (taxes) to improve the roads and infrastructure. The money went to other programs and or just went some place else. With dangerous roads the Bay Area folks were less likely to make the trip over the hill.
The different cities and city governments around the lake never got on the same page and realized what a tourism gold mine they had on their hands. Instead of working together they worked against each other.
I thought ten years ago the CASINO GODS were going to shine on Lake County and bring the place together and the shear amount of money would start to fix everything and bring folks together. Well without looking to deep I believe the politics got to this as well.
Now with Real Estate prices lower in santa rosa then lake county, as well as zero growth in the job market in the north bay I believe the economy around clear lake will dry up and we will have to rename the area to some dust bowl texas town name.
hate to be so negative but it is a sad state of affairs! maybe someone will discover GOLD in lake county and the gold rush will be on! For our next negative discussion lets talk about South Lake Tahoe...

Re: Konocti Closing
if it was bought it 2007 it was probably over paid for. Who ever gets it next should get it for cheap with the current market and have a reasonable mortgage/rent and hopefully take the ride up if the economy goes that way.

Re: Konocti Closing
Last time I went there and only time, people walked by my truck and said "if he can afford that boat it wont hurt him to take his gas from it"
They did not know 6-3" 290lbs was in the front seat listening!
All 3 of them did not weigh up to me...lol.. they got a nice scare from the bear!
It is a nice area with so much potential. The sad part is a good business person would not buy a place with only a seasonal economy at best. We went up there last wekend and fished the left over raw sewage spill called clearlake, fishing was ok but on a holiday weekend on a sunday at 10 am Red Bud was totaly empty......
I hope a good business person will buy it improve the ramp and market this gem of a destination correctly if so we will all have a better place to be in the near future!

Hopefully someone will pick it up and make some major IMPROVEMENTS, such as a decent launch ramp, upgrade all the rooms, develop a RV Camp ground, and revamp the boat slips and all assoc with them, ie; power that doesnt kick out in the middle of the night.

Re: Konocti Closing
I was giving this some thought recently. That is why did most of these resort areas do so well in the 60, 70 and 80 and now they are all falling from glory.
When I was in high school during the 60,70's places like Berryessa, clearlake and then the building of the new homes around Oroville were all doing well. Small businesses like corner stores and gas stops and great eating spots with bars were all close by. There was one bar eating place near Spanish Flat that was always the hot spot to go.
Clear lake had a Denny's always open near red bud and they had hugh fishing events in red bud. We spent a lot of time in the clear lake area and the businesses were going strong, building and development was strong and the general areas were all well kept, people out enjoying the events of these areas and they all flourished. Lakeport for instance was nothing like it is now. It was really something. You had the best camping park on the water at Willow Point, great food and lodging all around and hugh fishing event turn outs. 150 boats at an event was nothing. Many people were there for other then fishing. We really had great times there and the fishing was really second place for most.
Then started the great decline. Homes and businesses were let go and were unkept, many were turned into rentals, businesses places who did great closed, things generally went down hill to our present state. My question is what happened? Was it old family money that was invested and now those who have it don't go there or care. Was it that travel was more limited then, such as cars and pre highway I 5 I 80 and such made travel less and so people went to areas and spent there time and money closer to home? Bay area people having second homes and spent big money there.
I just don't Know for sure any thoughts would be great....

Re: Konocti Closing
My family was from San Francisco and we used to vacation at Clearlake in the late 50's,early 60's. Take the drive up through Calistoga and through the winding road to the lake. We always stayed at the same resort in the "highlands". Austins beach had miniture golf and a roller skating rink nearby. Everything around the lake in that era was virtually new, all the resorts had been recently built it seemed. Good times. I think the creation of Berryessa took many Bay Area folks from Clearlake. Recently I asked a resort owner at Clearlake what he thought brought on its "decline" (so to speak) and without hesitation he told me it was the resorts needing to rent some of their cabins, long term, to offset how slow things were during the winter. A shame.

Re: Konocti Closing
I don't know exactly when this practice started, or if it's even totally true, but I've hears that the town of Clearlake or surrounding areas, is a drop off point for newly released convicts.I'm assuming thay the city or county gets some state or federal funds to do this.
Now I'd like to think that most of these folks have paid their dues and are rehabilitated, but it makes for a disproportionate amount of "shady looking characters" in the area. Do ya think this would have anything to do with the well being of Lake Co??
I believe we have alot of people living near the poverty level up here probably because of their history (ex-con) and/or their inability to get moved somewhere else where they can get a job and blend in better. This of course just leads to apathy and laziness which just continues the cycle of welfare, crime, etc. Who in the hell would want to invest or live with that!
I also don't think the problems with drugs is any worse in Lake County than anywhere USA. It's a horrible problem for all of our society!
Now as far as the teeth thing goes, well it's probably true.
Twinger's reply is what got me thinking about this. Man I really miss the old days.
Any of you guys read stories by Patrick McManus? He's a hunting and fishing goof-off story teller about "the old days".Really funny stuff that a lot of us can relate to.
Sometimes I'm afraid that the good old days are just that, and whats lays ahead remains to be seen. Let's keep our fingers crossed and keep a positive outlook.

Poverty gravitates to the least expensive places to live. With poverty comes crime in most cases, not all. The major reason why Lake County never grew with he rest of the state is they have never had a railroad. Had rail come in the late 1800s this place would be as big as Santa Rosa.

SLT is slowly becoming another casualty of the economy. the good news is that it is very affordable for folks to purchase a place up there. the bad news is that there is so many places for sale around the lake it is amazing. I think the average income can purchase a place up there now.
I just moved my son up there and the job market is pretty tight as is everywhere else. The casino's are hurting from the competition in all the other communities.
still one of the most coolest places in the world!

Re: Konocti Closing (south lake tahoe)
This is pretty sad news. I've stayed there many times over the years. Yeah, the ramp sucks, but it IS launchable and there always seemed to be enough water there to launch even when the lake was low. The docks were ok but not great, but were very usable. AND, the resort was always Bass fisherermen friendly. I pretty much quit staying in Lakeport and Redbud due to the amount of crime and the lack of cleanliness at the motels, (except for the Mallard House in Lakeport) and the lack of friendlyness. Konocti Vista has been the next best place to stay. I'll miss Konocti Harbor Resort and the shows that they have put on with some very well known celebrities. Hopefully someone will pick this up and be able to manage it better. These are tough times and lots of changes and losses are about to come. I know, I lost my business after 27 yrs and am just trying to survive until I can retire............not easy.

Re: Konocti Closing (south lake tahoe)
I worked there the summer of '68 and was told then that 90% of the people were on some sort of public assistance for 3/4 of the year. The area thrived by walnuts, pears, and tourists. So, when summer went so did the money. Back then it was just a way of life. They made enough to survive.
Now with the economy the way it is, the things that have changed are some of the fields are now producing wine and the dopers switched from pot to crank, and people aren't spending the amounts to keep things running. Everything cost more, so the marginal can't survive. There is nothing for people to do besides fishing and the movies.
