Someone mentioned it to me the other day.

What are they trying to accomplish. Another question is how much water is in Millerton.

According to the Modesto Bee the release has been delayed for now.
Seems kinda stupid to release a bunch of water right now and then have it dry up in a couple weeks. They should wait after a couple storms pass through and then release the water.

Whoop

They started releasing water (Very Little) tonight at 6PM. The river will be controlled by the BLM

After 40yrs the SJ river from Millerton to Merced river has been dry, thus demoralizing the Salmon and Striper breeding grounds. By releasing the water (instead of directly giving it too the farmers) it will hopefully bring back the stripers and Salmon run.

What is planned, but they themselves don't rely know for sure is what will happen to the water once it is release. The underground water is depleted (so they think it might just go underground for a while). Their releasing very little at the moment to see what may occur.

Once the river is established to what it was back when. The water will be pumped back up through tracy and the farmer's will get the same water, but through a different channel of systems. By the way the farmers thought of this not the politions.

Its a good thing in my opinion, but only time will tell. This is only the beginning

I sure would like to know how they plan to get the water back to the Friant water users. The closest that water would ever hope to get back would be the Mendota pool vie the Delta Mendota canal. There just isn't any conveyance facilities to do that.

At a cost that could approach 1billion to get a target of 500 Salmon. That works out to be 2 million a fish. Sounds like another Condor boondoggle to me. Both sides have already stated in a public forum that the agreed upon flows will not be sufficient for the smolts to survive. Then the will sue for the rest of Millertons water.

Its not that anybody is choosing fish over farming. The time has come in our society where we have to make a decision, and that decision is do we try to strike a balance between the needs of the environment and the needs of humans (which by the way are really one and the same), or do we continue as we have for decades and watch as the environment and all its critters continue to go down the so called tubes (and with it our quality of life). Each side needs to give a little, and up to this point its been very one sided (Ill leave the reader to determine which side has been raping the other). There is a middle ground that can be found with good science, careful thought, and wise negotiations. There is a way for everybody to be happy. This "pilot" program is the first step towards seeing where that middle ground may be. So, its not about fish over farming, its about fish and farming finding a balance that benefits both sides and where each can be sustainable for generations to come.

Is there a hatchery on that river for salmon and steelhead? They wouldn't be harvesting eggs yet anyway. The American at notomas has allot up already, but I don't think they take eggs for a month.

Anyways I doubt the water release has anything to do with fish. Some yuppy probably put in a second pool in sandiego or something.

Well said Steve. Hopefully no political agenda behind this but really a compromise like you said. Only time will tell?
